OXFORD, Ohio – For their performances last week hockey’s junior goalie Jay Williams and women’s basketball’s freshman guard Baleigh Reid are Miami’s Athletes of the Week connected by Frontier Communications for the week of Feb. 9-15.
Williams was sensational in net for the RedHawks as they picked up their first-ever regular season road NCHC series sweep at Colorado College over the weekend. The junior netminder made 22 saves in Friday's 3-1 win, but he saved his best for last. Williams stopped 26 of 27 shots in Saturday's finale and turned aside all 14 shots he faced in the third period to hold the surging Tigers off the board in a 2-1 sweep-clinching victory. Those wins improve Williams to 16-4 on the season, tying for the top winning percentage in the country, while his 1.66 goals against average is the fourth-best figure among NCAA goalies.
This is the third time this season and fourth time in his career that Williams has been named Miami’s Male Athlete of the Week. He last won it for the week of Nov. 3-9.
Reid had a breakout week in leading Miami in scoring with an average of 15.5 points per game. She helped the RedHawks get their first MAC win of the season with 15 points in 35 minutes of action against Kent State on Wednesday. She also had two assists and a block against the Golden Flashes. Reid followed that up with a career-high tying 16 points against Ohio. She had two assists and two blocks as well in 29 minutes of action. Reid is Miami’s leading scorer at 10.0 points per game and has scored in double figures in five straight contests.
This is the second time this season and in her career that Reid has earned Miami’s Female Athlete of the Week honor. She previously won it for the week of Nov. 25-30.
