Hockey
Last Week: The seventh-ranked RedHawks pulled off their first regular season road series sweep of an NCHC foe at Colorado College last weekend. Things started inauspiciously for MU when Luc Gerdes scored shorthanded 6:19 into Friday night’s series opener, but Cody Murphy answered with a power play goal 26 seconds later to even the score at 1-1. Riley Barber gave Miami its first lead of the night with a shorthanded goal at the 16:21 mark of the second period and Justin Greenberg’s first goal of the season served as insurance midway through the third as MU skated to a 3-1 win (Recap). Power plays dominated in the second as Miami got tallies from Louie Belpedio and Sean Kuraly with the man advantage to grab a 2-0 lead late in the second. CC’s Scott Wamsganz added a power play tally of his own to cut Miami’s lead to 2-1 after 40 minutes. Jay Williams stood tall in the third period, making 14 of his 26 saves to hold off the Tigers’ charge in a 2-1 victory (Recap). This Week: Miami sits in a three-way tie for first in the NCHC standings and hosts Minnesota Duluth for a two-game series at Steve ‘Coach’ Cady Arena on Friday (7:35 p.m.) and Saturday (7:05 p.m.).
Men’s Basketball:
Last Week: On a night where the late Charlie Coles’ jersey was sent to the Millett Hall rafters, Miami put up an effort he would be proud of in a 77-66 win over rival Ohio on Saturday. (Recap) Last Tuesday, the RedHawks dropped an 83-69 decision at Eastern Michigan. (Recap) This Week: Miami hits the road for a pair of games. The RedHawks travel to Bowling Green for a 7 p.m. game on Wednesday, Feb. 18. The game will be aired on ESPN3. Miami then travels to Akron for a 7:30 p.m. game on Saturday, Feb. 21.
Women’s Basketball
Last Week: Miami (4-19 overall, 1-11 MAC) got back on the winning track when earned a split this week. The RedHawks used a complete effort both on the offensive and defensive end to come away with their first Mid-American Conference win on Wednesday. The RedHawks defeated Kent State, 69-53. (Recap) Agritty defensive game kept Miami within six points of Mid-American Conference leader Ohio early in the second half, but a tough-shooting night was too much to overcome in a 67-45 loss on Saturday. (Recap) (Photo Gallery) This Week: Miami hosts Eastern Michigan on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in a makeup of the game postponed on Feb. 7. At the conclusion of the game, the RedHawks will host a free clinic. (Release) Miami hits the road for a Saturday contest at Buffalo. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
Women’s Tennis
Last Week: The RedHawks captured a 5-2 victory over #67 Furman University at the Atlanta Athletic Club. The win snapped a three-game losing streak and marked Miami’s first road victory of the 2015 season. (Recap) Miami was unable to take home a weekend sweep as it was defeated 6-1 Sunday by the Georgia State Panthers at the Atlanta Athletic Club. (Recap) This Week: The RedHawks will now take a two-week break before returning to the courts for a pair of weekend matches.
Men’s Swimming & Diving
Last Week: A portion of the team traveled to Columbus to participate in the Ohio State Winter Invitational Feb. 14-15 in the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. It was a non-team scored event (Day One Recap) (Day Two Recap) Sophomore diver Sean Sargent was named the Mid-American Conference Male Swimmer of the Week following his impressive performance in Miami’s regular-season finale against Ball State on Feb. 7. (Release) This Week: Miami is off until the Mid-American Conference Championships March 5-7.
Synchronized Skating
Last Week: Miami was idle This Week: All three teams will host a Nationals Send-Off Exhibition at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21 in Steve “Coach” Cady Arena. Admission is free.
Softball
Last Week: Miami (5-2 overall) had its offense working the entire day, while two great pitching performances led to a doubleheader sweep of Austin Peay on Friday. The RedHawks won the opener, 13-2. They came back to take the nightcap, 9-0. That game ended in five innings due to the run rule. It featured the first career no-hitter for senior pitcher Remy Edwards. (Recap) This Week: Miami returns to action this weekend when it travels to Nashville for the Tiger Classic. On Saturday, Feb. 21, the RedHawks will take on Bradley at 10 a.m. (EST) and Loyola (Chi.) at 12:15 p.m. (EST). On Sunday, Feb. 22, Miami faces St. Bonaventure at 10:30 a.m. and the host, Tennessee State at 5:15 p.m. (EST).
Women’s Track and Field
Last Week: The RedHawks trekked north to the Grand Valley Big Meet. Amelia Strickler headlined the trip by unleashing a new school-record throw of 55-5.75 in the invitational section of the shot put. That throw moved her up to eighth on the NCAA performance list. Jess Hoover also put together a season-best 5000m time of 17:06.84, placing eighth in the race and clinching a spot at the MAC Indoor Championships (Recap). This Week: Miami heads to Columbus, Ohio for the Ohio State Tune-Up this weekend.
Men’s Track and Field
Last Week: The RedHawk men competed in their first indoor meet of the season at the Hoosier Hills Invitational. Joe Stewart posted a solid 3000m time of 8:16.45 to take fifth in his first race since the NCAA Cross Country Championship. Grant Cole (3rd; 23-10.25) and Kenny Glenn (4th; 23-9.5) also posted top-five finishes in the long jump to headline the Red and White (Recap). This Week: The RedHawks wrap up their indoor slate at the Ohio State Tune-Up this weekend.
Golf
Last Week: The RedHawks finished in a tie for third at the Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play this past week, defeating Ohio, 5-1, and falling to Toledo, 4-2. (Day 1 Recap) (Day 2 Recap) This Week: Miami is idle this week. It returns to action March 1-2 at the Colleton River Collegiate.
Baseball
Last Week: The RedHawks opened the 2015 season at the Mississippi State Classic in Starkville, Miss. against Cincinnati and Mississippi State. They were defeated by the Bearcats, 3-1 (Recap), and the Bulldogs, 7-1 (Recap). This Week: The team heads back down south as they travel to Spartanburg, S.C. to compete in the Wofford Tournament this coming weekend. On Friday, the team squares off against UNC-Asheville at 12 p.m. ET. Saturday's game features the Red & White against host Wofford at 2 p.m. ET. In the series finale, the RedHawks will take on USC Upstate at 1 p.m. ET.
