MU Finishes First, Fourth at Midwesterns

EDINA, Minn.—On the final day of the Midwestern Championships, the Miami University collegiate synchronized skating team came away with gold, while the RedHawk junior team finished fourth among a seven-team field.
Skating to music from the movie “Nine” featuring the songs “Cinema Italiano” and “Be Italian,” the collegiate team had a clean skate and notched a score of 96.78 with a program component score of 55.20 and a technical element score of 41.58. The RedHawks finished 15.22 points ahead of second-place Michigan State (81.56). Michigan finished in third (79.08) followed by Adrian (78.88), Western Michigan (75.30), Illinois (75.26), Wisconsin (64.94) and Notre Dame (61.52).
It was a season high score for the RedHawk collegiate team, who eclipsed their previous season high by 19.78 points.
Miami’s junior team dropped from third after the short program where they posted a score of 45.96 to fourth in the overall standings. With their free skate program set to music from the musical “Aladdin,” the RedHawks had a clean skate and notched a season-high free skate score of 81.30 with a program component score of 46.48 and a technical element score of 34.82.
Miami finished with a combined score of 127.26, also a season high. Chicago Jazz won the Midwestern Championships with a combined score of 142.84 with Team Braemar in second (136.00) and Crystallettes (131.26) in third. Hocketts followed Miami in fifth place with a combined score of 126.60 with the Fond Du Lac Blades (123.82) and Starlights (117.36) rounding out the junior field, respectively.
The RedHawk junior team has a quick turnaround, traveling to Marlborough, Mass., next weekend for the Junior World Qualifier Feb. 6-7. Miami’s collegiate and senior teams are off until the U.S. National Championships in late February.
