OXFORD, Ohio -- For their performances last week senior men's swimmer Evan Bader and the senior synchronized skating team are Miami's Athletes of the Week for the week of Nov. 30-Dec. 6.
After returning from the Arena Pro Series a few weeks ago, breaststroke specialist Bader returned to the water for the three-day Miami Invitational, competing against swimmers from Denison, Emory and Urbana. Bader turned in the only first-place finish for Miami in the 200-yard breaststroke where he clocked a D3 qualifying time of 2:03.11, beating the competition from Denison by two-tenths of a second. He secured second place in the 100-yard breaststroke with another D3-cut time of 56.20. Bader swam in the 200-yard IM where he finished in 11th place, touching the wall in 1:54.70. He also swam legs of two relays, the 400-yard medley relay (fourth, 3:21.64) and 200-yard medley relay (fifth, 1:32.38). Bader contributed a total of 81 points for his individual events.
This is the first time this season and third time in his career that Bader has been named Miami's Male Athlete of the Week. He last won it for the week of Nov. 18-24, 2013.
Winning by nearly a 21-point margin, the Miami University senior synchronized skating team had a dominant outing last weekend at the Dr. Richard Porter Classic. Skating their short program to the song "Breath of Life", the senior team notched a score of 59.70 to lead its nearest competitors by eight points on Friday. On Saturday, Miami had a clean skate for its Latin dance-themed free skate and recorded a season-high score of 114.30, nearly 13 points ahead of its nearest competitors to stretch its overall margin of victory in the combined scoring. Miami finished with an overall score of 174.00 at the Dr. Richard Porter Classic to capture gold among the eight-team field. It is the second-straight competition the RedHawk senior team has won.
This is the first time this season and second time overall that the senior team has been named Miami's Female Athlete of the Week. It last won it for the week of April 6-12, 2015.
Due to finals week and lack of events, there will be no Athlete of the Week next week. The next Miami Athletes of the Week will be announced Monday, Dec. 21.
