ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Miami University women's basketball team ran into a hot shooting Michigan offense on Saturday as it fell, 97-55 in non-conference action. The RedHawks are now 5-4 on the season, while the Wolverines improve to 8-2.
Sophomore guard Baleigh Reid had another strong game for Miami, finishing 7-for-13 from the field for 19 points. She was joined in double figures by sophomore guard Ana Richter, who had 11 points.
Michigan jumped to a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter, forcing Miami to call timeout. Out of the break the RedHawks settled down a bit as Reid and Richter hit layups to pull them within three. A layup from freshman guard Leah Purvis cut the deficit to five at 11-6 with 5:26 left in the period. The Wolverines three-point attack warmed up at that point, while they also used several transition baskets to close the quarter on an 18-3 run and take a 29-9 lead at the end of one.
Michigan pushed the advantage to 36-11 before the Miami offense began to heat up. Richter hit three jumpers, while buckets by sophomore forward Molly McDonagh and Reid were part of a 10-6 run that made it 42-21 with 2:22 left in the second. Reid drained a three-pointer, while sophomore guard Jazz Smith hit a jumper to send the RedHawks into the break trailing the Wolverines, 49-26.
Miami shot 44.4 percent (12-for-27) during the first half, while Michigan hit 52.9 percent (18-for-34) of its shots. That included a 6-for-12 performance from behind the arc. The `Hawks were led by Richter with eight points and Reid with seven.
The Wolverines broke the game open with a 10-0 run to begin the third quarter. Reid quieted the run with five straight points on a jumper and a three-pointer. Reid went on to score another layup, while freshman guard Kendall McCoy and redshirt sophomore Megan Galloway each hit shots, but U of M took a 74-37 lead into the final period.
Sophomore guard Jazz Smith and Richter both drained triples early in the fourth quarter. They were joined in the scorebook by freshman guard Nanci Hunter, who hit her first career three-pointer and McCoy, who finished the RedHawks scoring with a jumper at the 1:39 mark.
Miami finished the game shooting 43.4 percent (23-for-53). Smith and McCoy each finished with seven points each. The Red and White had 15 assists on their 23 baskets, led by Purvis with four. Michigan took advantage of 24 RedHawk turnovers, turning them into 27 points. The Wolverines were led by Katelynn Flannery with 25 points.
The RedHawks are off for the holidays and will return to action when they travel to Boca Raton, Florida for the Florida Atlantic Holiday Tournament, Dec. 29-30. Miami will take on LIU-Brooklyn on Tuesday, Dec. 29 at 7:30 p.m. The Red and White will then face either Bethune Cookman or FAU on Wednesday, Dec. 30 at either 5 or 7:30 p.m. depending of if they are in the consolation or championship game.
