OXFORD, Ohio -- For their performances last week golf sophomore Patrick Flavin and volleyball junior middle hitter Paige Hill are Miami's Athletes of the Week for the week of Sept. 28-Oct. 4.
Flavin won his first collegiate golf tournament when he took the individual championship at the Badger Invitational on Tuesday. He grabbed hold of the lead in the first round following a 4-under round of 68. He began to pull away on the second day when he posted another round of 68 to go into the third and final day at 8-under par. Flavin's last day brought a one-under round of 71, pulling his overall score up to a 9-under par.
Flavin's 36-hole score (136) ranks second and 54-hole score (207) ranks fifth in Badger Invitational history. He recorded three of the tournament's five eagles. Even further, the RedHawks' team score of 278 on the first day of competition marks the lowest team score for an 18-hole round in tournament history.
This is the first time this season and second time in his career that Flavin has been named Miami's Male Athlete of the Week. He last won it for the week of March 23-29, 2015.
Hill led a dominant Miami with offense with 18 total kills, an average of 3.00 per set. She made only three attack errors in 31 attempts, hitting an extremely efficient .484 as the RedHawks swept both of their matches this past weekend. Against Buffalo on Friday, Hill recorded seven kills in 12 attempts for a .583 attack percentage. She also had a solo block. In Miami's 3-0 victory over Akron on Saturday, she had 11 kills and a .421 attack percentage to go with four blocks (one solo and three assisted). When you include her blocks over the weekend, Hill was responsible for 21.5 points scored in the two matches.
This is the first time this season and third time in her career that Hill has been named Miami's Female Athlete of the Week. She last won it for the week of Aug. 25-31, 2014.
The next Miami Athletes of the Week will be announced Monday, October 12.
