Miami Drops 34-3 Decision to Ohio

ATHENS, Ohio -- The Miami University football team fell to Ohio, 34-3, Saturday in Athens. The RedHawks drop to 1-5 on the season and 0-2 in the Mid-American Conference. The Bobcats improve to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the MAC.
Sophomore wide receiver Jared Murphy had a solid game for Miami, finishing with three catches for 76 yards. Senior linebacker Kent Kern led the RedHawk defense with seven tackles and one quarterback hurry.
Ohio struck first with a score on its opening drive. The Bobcats drove the ball 89 yards over 11 plays, finishing it off with a two-yard touchdown run from Daz'mond Patterson. The extra point by Josiah Yazdani gave OU a 7-0 lead with 10:14 remaining in the first quarter.
The RedHawk defense held strong over the next three drives, forcing three Ohio punts. The Bobcats got back on the board when a six-yard touchdown pass from Derrius Vick to Sebastian Smith made it 14-0 with 9:43 to go in the half.
Freshman Billy Bahl made his first career start at quarterback on Saturday. On the next drive after the Bobcat score, he found Murphy down the middle for a 45-yard completion. That set up a 34-yard field goal from senior kicker Kaleb Patterson at the 6:30 mark of the second quarter that cut the Miami deficit to 14-3.
Yazdani hit a 50-yard field goal for Ohio to give the Bobcats a 17-3 advantage at halftime.
A pair of interceptions led to a touchdown and a field goal for Ohio, which pushed its lead to 27-3 midway through the third quarter. The Bobcats were driving for another score late in the period, but senior defensive back Brison Burris recorded his second interception of the season in the end zone to end the Ohio threat.
Miami's defense held the Bobcats off the board until a late touchdown in the fourth quarter completed the 34-3 victory.
The RedHawks return home next weekend when they host Northern Illinois for Family Weekend. Game time is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
