FRASER, Mich.--It was a golden weekend for the Miami University collegiate and junior synchronized skating teams as both teams seized first-place finishes at the Mid-America Championships on Saturday.
In their first competition since Dec. 6-7, Miami had a strong showing at the Mid-America Championships.
The RedHawk junior team started the day winning the short program with their “Jock Jams Megamix” themed skate. Miami posted a score of 44.44 and topped the Crystallettes, who scored 36.18, by more than eight points. In an uncharacteristic format, the junior team also competed its free skate on Saturday afternoon. With its program choreographed to music from “Aladdin”, Miami edged the Crystallettes by a score of 76.86 to 75.36. There was no combined scoring at the event.
Miami’s collegiate team won their second straight event among the six-team field. Set to music from the movie “Nine” featuring the songs “Cinema Italiano” and “Be Italian”, Miami took the Mid-America Championships with a score of 72.48. Delaware finished second with a score of 69.21 followed by Michigan (65.83), Western Michigan (65.10), Adrian (61.82) and Michigan State (57.35).
Both the collegiate and junior teams are next in action at the Midwestern Championships in Edina, Minn., Jan. 29-30. The RedHawk senior team travels to Salzburg, Austria next weekend for the Mozart Cup Jan. 23-24.
