Hockey
Last Week: The RedHawks had a difficult trip to St. Cloud State, suffering their first sweep of the year to fall out of first place in the NCHC. Sean Kuraly gave Miami a 1-0 lead five minutes into the second period in Friday’s season opener, but David Morley scored on a 5-on-3 to even the score at 1-1 after 40 minutes. Joe Rehkamp gave SCSU its first lead of the night early in the third and Morley scored his second of the night with 1:37 to drop MU 3-1 (Recap). Jonny Brodzinski dug Miami into a hole 2:09 into the series finale and a Patrick Russell goal with 11 seconds left in the first put MU down 2-0 after the first period. Kevin Morris pulled the RedHawks within one when he scored a power play goal in the second and after falling behind 3-1 in the third, Austin Czarnik drew MU within 3-2 with 9:03 remaining. That was as close as Miami got as it fell 3-2 to drop to 14-8 on the season (Recap). This Week: Miami is off until it hosts a two-game series against Denver Jan. 23-24.
Men’s Basketball
Last Week: Miami overcame a 25-point deficit to pick up a thrilling 82-82 overtime win against Eastern Michigan on Saturday. Junior guard Eric Washington hit two 3-pointers in the last 11 seconds to send the game to overtime, while senior guard Will Sullivan recorded his first double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. (Recap) Miami suffered a hard-fought 79-72 loss to Buffalo to open MAC play on Wednesday. Sullivan led the RedHawks with 21 points, while Washington had a double-double with 10 points, 10 assists and added eight rebounds. (Recap) This Week: Miami hits the road for a pair of games at Central Michigan at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 14 and at Buffalo at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17. Miami’s game at Central Michigan will be on ESPN3.
Women’s Basketball
Last Week: Miami (3-11 overall, 0-3 MAC) fell in a pair of MAC contests this past week. The RedHawk ran into a hot shooting Ball State squad, while a tough night handling the ball led to a 72-41 defeat Wednesday evening in Muncie. (Recap) Miami held Buffalo scoreless over an eight and a half minute period during the second half to get back into the game, but its offense went cold late as the Bulls pulled away to take a 71-51 victory on Saturday afternoon. (Recap) (Photo Gallery) This Week: Miami completes a three-game homestand with a pair of contests at Millett Hall this week. On Wednesday the RedHawks host Central Michigan at 7 p.m. They then will take on Akron on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Women’s Track and Field
Last Week: Miami’s distance runners were sharp after the long break by shining at the Bowling Green Opener. Eight RedHawk runners finished in the top-10 of the 5000m, led by Anna Lamb’s 17:28.10 pace. Lamb was one of three Miami competitors to win events as Alexus Jimson-Miller won the 60m hurdles (8.55) right before placing third in the 60m (7.77). Jess Baker also took gold in the high jump after clearing 1.60m. The RedHawks finished third in the team scoring with 101 points, trailing host Bowling Green (137) and Western Michigan (120) while besting Ball State (78), Toledo (68) and IPFW (20) (Recap). This Week: Miami heads to Lexington for the Kentucky Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
Synchronized Skating
Last Week: Behind a superb skate, the senior team won the short program event at the Colonial Classic with a score of 55.22. Miami placed second in the free-skate event with a score of 95.86. There was no combined scoring for the competition. (Recap) This Week: The RedHawk collegiate and junior teams return to the ice this weekend at the Mid-America Championships in Fraser, Mich. Jan. 17-18.
Men’s Swimming & Diving
Last Week: Miami suffered a 182-118 loss at Cincinnati as it returned to the pool for the first time in a month on Saturday. Junior Sean Neri brought hom a first-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly. (Recap) This Week: Miami hosts Buffalo at noon on Friday, Jan. 16.
Women’s Swimming & Diving
Last Week: Miami clinched a 188-111 win at Cincinnati on Saturday to move to 3-2 in dual meet action. Strong swimming by the RedHawks resulted in nine first-place finishes. Sophomore Stephanie LeMire had another strong day with two individual first-place finishes and a first-place relay finish. (Recap) Next Week: Miami hosts Buffalo at noon on Friday, Jan. 16.
