OXFORD, Ohio – For their performances last week junior linebacker Kent Kern and senior soccer midfielder Kelsey Dinges are Miami’s Athletes of the Week connected by Frontier Communications for the week of Sept. 1-7.
Kern finished Saturday's contest with 10 tackles, one tackle for loss and two pass breakups in the 17-10 loss versus Eastern Kentucky. Kern and the Miami defense held the Colonels to 280 yards of total offense on 60 plays and allowed just 82 yards on the ground.
This is the first time in Kern’s career he has earned Miami’s Male Athlete of the Week honor.
With Sunday’s contest at Louisville, a 2013 NCAA Tournament qualifier, tied in the second half, Dinges picked a perfect time to notch her first goal of the season. Her tally with 34 minutes remaining gave the RedHawks a 2-1 lead that they would not relinquish to improve to 3-1 on the young season. That victory was Miami’s first over Louisville since Sept. 9, 2001, snapping a five-match losing streak in the series.
This is the first time this season and fourth time in her career that Dinges has earned Miami’s Female Athlete of the Week honor. She last won it for the week of Oct. 14-20, 2013.
The next Miami Athletes of the Week connected by Frontier Communications will be announced Monday, Sept. 15. For a list of this year’s winner’s, click here.
