RedHawks Fall to Hoosiers, 1-3

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – With every set going down to the wire, Miami fell just short in a 1-3 (26-28, 25-23, 22-25, 23-25) decision to Indiana to open up the Indiana Invitational on Friday. The RedHawks fall to 2-2 on the season, while the Hoosiers improve to 4-0.
Freshman outside hitter Olivia Rusek continued the strong start to her collegiate career. She led Miami with a career-high 12 kills, while also contributing six digs. After receiving limited playing time last week while still recovering from an offseason injury, redshirt junior middle hitter Jenny Ingle returned to full-time action on Friday. She contributed nine kills and assisted on three blocks. She made only one error in 12 total attacks for a hitting percentage of .667.
The first set started out slowly for Miami as it fell behind, 6-14. A service ace from senior outside hitter/setter Meg Riley, along with kills from Rusek and junior outside hitter Annie Reiswig were part of an 8-3 run that pulled the ‘Hawks to within three at 14-17. The Hoosiers pushed the advantage back to six before three straight points by Miami made it a three-point sscore at 18-21. IU scored next, but the RedHawks answered with back-to-back kills from Riley and Rusek. The teams traded points until the Hoosiers had set point at 24-22, but Miami forced them to commit two straight attack errors to tie the score. Trailing 24-25, a kill by Rusek and an Indiana attack error gave the ‘Hawks set point at 26-25. The comeback was not to be however, as IU answered with the final three points to take a 28-26 win.
Kills from Reiswig and Ingle helped Miami open up a 9-5 lead to begin set two. Reiswig continued her attack with two more kills as the RedHawks maintained a four-point advantage. Trailing 10-14, an 8-1 run by Indiana put the Hoosiers in front, 18-15. Miami did not give up as a solo block from Reiswig and a kill from Ingle sparked a 5-2 run that tied the score at 20. Tied at 22, a block by Rusek and sophomore middle hitter Paige Hill put the Red and White in front. After the teams traded points, Rusek put down a final kill to give MU a 25-23 victory.
Ingle scored a pair of kills to help Miami to a 4-2 lead early in set three. The Hoosiers responded with a 10-4 run to take a 12-8 advantage. Riley, Ingle and senior right side hitter Sarah Chaney each had kills to keep the RedHawks within striking distance, but Indiana maintained its lead. After a kill by freshman outside hitter Katie Tomasic made it 18-22, two straight points by IU gave it set point. Miami fought it off four times, but a final kill gave Indiana a 25-22 win.
With the score tied at nine in set four, a 6-2 run by Indiana put the Hoosiers in front, 15-11. A kill by Riley off sophomore setter Krista Brakauskas’ assist and two kill from Rusek started a 6-1 run that put the RedHawks in front, 17-16. The run continued when Hill recorded a solo block to give Miami a two-point cushion. Indiana responded with five straight points to take control back at 21-18. Kills by Rusek and Reiswig helped the ‘Hawks pull within one at 21-22, but two straight Hoosier points gave them match point. Reiswig and Rusek followed with back-to-back kills to make it a one-point game once again, but Indiana score next to earn a 25-23 victory and take the match, 3-1.
Reiswig added nine kills to the Miami attack, while Riley contributed six kills, six digs and a team-leading 21 assists. Senior libero Tori Clifford led the RedHawks with eight digs.
Miami continues play at the Indiana Invitational on Saturday when it faces Mississippi State at 10 a.m.
