MU has Successful Second Day at Dr. Porter

ANN ARBOR, Mich.—Strong skating propelled the Miami University synchronized skating teams to a successful second day at the Dr. Richard Porter Classic on Sunday afternoon. Miami’s senior and collegiate teams each posted first-place finishes at the season-opening competition for the RedHawks, while the junior team moved up a spot in the final standings with their free skate performance.
Leading the senior field after the short program, the RedHawk senior team maintained their hold on first place in Sunday’s free skate. Set to an Elvis montage that includes “Blue Suede Shoes”, “A Little Less Conversation”, and “Heartbreak Hotel,” Miami posted a score of 111.48 for its free-skate program. The RedHawks finished first in the free skate and ended the competition with a combined score of 163.26, edging Skyliners who finished second with a combined score of 160.18. Crystallettes finished third with a combined score of 141.20 followed by Adrian College (117.20), ICE’Kateers (114.98), Starlights (109.70), Western Michigan (106.78) and Team Excel (98.48).
Miami’s collegiate team also notched a first-place finish with their program choreographed to music from the movie “Nine” featuring the songs “Cinema Italiano” and “Be Italian”. The RedHawks earned a score of 77.00 en route to their first win of the season. Delaware finished in second place with a score of 73.90, followed by Michigan State (68.72), Michigan (68.02), Western Michigan (62.34), Team Excel (61.98), Adrian College (61.18), Illinois (56.24), Wisconsin (55.92), Maryland (50.50) and The Fighting Irish (46.68).
The RedHawk junior team also had a good free skate, moving up in the final standings to sixth place with an overall score of 111.88, improving a spot from their short program. Skating to music from “Aladdin”, Miami notched a score of 72.98 to finish sixth in the free skate. Skyliners won the junior division with a combined score of 134.76 followed by Les Pirouettes (132.84), Chicago Jazz (130.70), Saint Louis Synergy (130.30), Hockettes (123.72), Miami (111.88), Fond du Lac Blades (110.68), Crystallettes (110.58), Synchroettes (105.40), Team Delaware (104.30), Starlights (103.70), Team Braemar (97.70), California Gold (93.78) and ICE’Kateers (77.62).
Miami has a month off before returning to the ice. The senior team will compete at the Colonial Classic in Lowell, Mass., Jan. 10-11, while the collegiate and junior teams will compete at the Mid-America Championships in Fraser, Mich., the following weekend (Jan. 17-18).
