OXFORD, Ohio – For their performances last week junior hockey goalie Jay Williams and freshman soccer forward Kat Zalar are Miami’s Athletes of the Week connected by Frontier Communications for the week of Oct. 13-19.
Williams continued his hot start to the season by winning his first two starts of the year against Ohio State. The junior made 26 saves and carried a shutout into the third period in Friday's decisive 5-1 victory, making a particularly important save on a short-handed breakaway shortly after the Buckeyes cut the RedHawks' lead to 3-1 in the third. Despite facing limited action with Miami firing 62 shots on Saturday, Williams remained sharp throughout Saturday's series finale, making 19 saves, including five in the last seven minutes of the game to secure a 2-1 win and a weekend sweep. Williams is now 3-0 this season with a 1.38 goals against average and a .944 save percentage.
This is the first time this season and second time in his career that Williams has been named Miami’s Athlete of the Week. He previously earned the honor for the week of Dec. 24-30, 2012.
Zalar doubled her season total in goals by scoring three of the RedHawks’ four tallies in a pair of home victories over Northern Illinois and defending MAC Tournament champion Western Michigan. The freshman struck twice in the first half, which included the eventual game-winning goal to hand the Huskies their second conference loss of the year. Two days later, her goal in the 84th minute broke a scoreless tie and help the Red and White keep pace with first place Buffalo, remaining just one point behind the Bulls for the outright MAC lead.
This is the first time in her career that Zalar has been named Miami’s Female Athlete of the Week.
