RedHawks Defeat Xavier, 142-113

OXFORD, Ohio – Capturing wins in eight of 14 events, the Miami University men’s swimming and diving team officially opened up its season with a 142-113 win over Xavier University on Saturday afternoon at the Nixon Aquatic Center.
RedHawk veterans and newcomers boasted strong performances throughout the day.
Freshman Ross Westrick brought home two individual first-place finishes in the 100-yard freestyle (47.12) and in the 200-yard freestyle (1:42.41). Westrick also swam a leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay which was another first place for the RedHawks.
Returning RedHawks, senior Sam Crockett, junior Heshan Unamboowe, senior Joe Baumgartner, sophomore Jack Strauss and sophomore Bryan McNamara all turned first-place finishes as well. Crockett placed first in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:12.56). Unamboowe placed first in the 200 yard backstroke, touching the wall in a time of 1:55.95, while Baumgartner took the 50-yard freestyle, clocking a time of 20.53. Strauss won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 52.71. McNamara placed first in the 1000-yard freestyle as the only swimmer Miami swimmer in the event. Touching the wall in a time of 9:45.69, McNamara finished 10 seconds faster than his nearest Xavier competitor.
Freshman Pete Simcox took first in the 100-yard butterfly, clocking a time of 52.30. Another notable freshman performance was turned in by Ross Rybakowicz, who swam to second place in the 200-yard butterfly (1:56.96).
The RedHawk men took first in both the relays. Junior Sean Neri, junior Evan Bader, junior Davis Staley and sophomore Lucas Brock swam to first place in the 400-yard medley relay with a finishing time of 3:29.44. The combined efforts of Baumgartner, Westrick, Strauss, and junior Jake Prodeohl earned first in the 200-yard freestyle, clocking a time of 1:23.98.
The men will next compete on Thursday, Oct. 30 back in the Nixon Aquatic Center against Purdue at 7 p.m.
