Five Swimmers Named Academic All-MAC

OXFORD, Ohio – Three Miami University women’s swimmers and two RedHawk divers have been named to the 30-person 2013 Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team.
Miami’s five first-teamers were more than any other MAC institution while its 20 total honorees nearly doubled every other school.
Junior NIKKI CRAFT (Bay Village, 3.58 GPA, majoring in special education), senior MADDIE KETE (Bay Village, 3.66 GPA, majoring in accountancy), senior MAEGAN O’CONNOR (Fishers, IN, 3.63 GPA, majoring in exercise science), junior LEAH THORNTON (Helena, AL, 3.60, zoology) and senior LISA WERWINSKI (Canton, 3.98 GPA, majoring in mathematic education) all were named first-team All-MAC selections. Thornton and Werwinski became first-team honorees for the third consecutive year, while Craft, Kete and O’Connor all are two-time first-team notables.
O’Connor and Thornton both were named to the All-MAC Second Team at the 2013 MAC Swimming and Diving Championships.
Winning honorable mention (HM) Academic All-MAC laurels in 2013 were a record 15 other RedHawks, including senior ELLEN BARHORST (West Chester, also HM in 2011 & 2012), sophomore KATIE BOOTSMA (Eden Prairie, MN), sophomore COURTNEY COLLETT (Hilton Head Island, SC), sophomore EMMA CRAIG (Ann Arbor, MI), junior CYNTHIA DONOVAN (Cincinnati, also HM in 2012), junior BRIANNA FUJAN (Byron, MN, also HM in 2012), sophomore CAITLIN FUJAN (Byron, MN), senior MANDI GRANDJEAN (Canton, also HM in 2011 & 2012), senior LAURA KRUEGER (Cincinnati, also HM in 2012), sophomore ANNIE MARQUISS (Solon), sophomore STEPHANIE PEARCE (Cincinnati), sophomore GABBIE PETTINICHI (Cincinnati), junior KAYLA SCOTT (St. Charles, IL, also HM in 2012), senior MOLLY TYLER (Birmingham, also HM in 2011 & 2012), and junior NICOLE WAGNER (Columbus).
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award. Outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments for the current season are only considered.
