Staley, Baumgartner Qualify for Finals

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Miami University freshman Davis Staley and sophomore Joe Baumgartner qualified for Saturday night's finals of the 2013 Mid-American Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championships.
In preliminary heats action at Southern Illinois University's Edward Shea Natatorium, Staley swam his heat of the 200 backstroke in a time of 1:48.69 to claim the eighth and last spot in the finals. The RedHawks will have four swimmers in the consolation finals Saturday night, including Mike Kline (1:49.26), Jake Prodoehl (1:49.60), Ian Joyce (1:50.38) and Sean Neri (1:50.94). Sam Flessner missed both of the points rounds with a time of 1:52.10.
Baumgartner made the finals of the 100 freestyle, recording the fourth-fastest time of the preliminary heats (44.98). Teammate Chris Dieter placed 22nd (2:16.51).
In the 200 breaststroke, three RedHawks qualified for the consolation finals: Sam Crockett (2:01.71), Evan Bader (2:04.35) and Will Olson (2:08.75). Jonathan Proffitt's time of 2:16.51 wasn't fast enough to make the points rounds.
Finally, in the 200 butterfly, Staley (1:52.66), Michael Cavanaugh (1:52.73) and Andy Kilkenny (1:55.25) will swim in Saturday night's consolation finals.
The final session of the MAC Championships begins at 8 p.m. ET.
