Day Two's Results at the Olympic Swimming Trials

OMAHA, Nebr. -- Miami University senior Leah Thornton (Helena, AL) and MU alumnae Megan Brunn (Mansfield) swam well Tuesday morning (June 26) at the Olympic Swimming Trials in Omaha, but fell short of qualifying for the 16-person semifinals in their respective events.
Thornton, swimming in the 11th of 17 heats of the 100 backstroke, touched the wall in a time of 1:04.91, about two seconds slower than her pre-Trials qualifying time of 1:03.14. Missy Franklin swam the fastest time of the preliminary event with a clocking of 59.54. The cut time for the 100 back semifinals was 1:02.22.
Brunn, a 2011 graduate of Miami, competed in heat nine of the 100 breaststroke, finishing in a time of 1:13.52. She missed her previous best time of 1:11.24 by a little more than two seconds. Rebecca Soni had the best time of more than 160 preliminary entries in the 100 breast, checking in a 1:06.33. The cut time for the 100 breast semifinals was 1:09.48.
On Saturday (June 30), Thornton gets a chance to redeem herself in the second of her two events at the Olympic Trials, the 200 backstroke. On Sunday (July 1), Bekka Westrick (Fairfield) and Maddie Kete (Bay Village) compete in the 50 freestyle.
