OMAHA, Nebr. -- Bekka Westrick (Fairfield) and Maegan O'Connor(Fishers, IN) competed Monday morning (June 25) at the Olympic Swimming Trials, but neither made the cut for the 16-person semifinals in the 100 butterfly event.
Westrick swam in lane seven of heat four. In her first 50, Westrick sprinted to a time of 28.28, but wound up finishing fourth in her heat with a time of 1:01.96, trailing only Justine Mueller (1:01.28), Mary Griffith (1:01.43) and Rachel O'Brien (1:01.80).
"Bekka had a really solid swim today," said head coach Dave Jennings. "She got off to a great start and looked strong on the way home."
O'Connor, bothered by an ankle sprain she incurred last week, finished with a time of 1:03.87 in heat 10.
"Maegan struggled a bit today," said Jennings. "She injured her ankle just before we left Oxford and she just wasn't able to kick as strong as she normally does."
Of the 164 athletes who competed in the 100 butterfly prelims, Dana Vollmer had the best time, clocking in at 56.59. A time of 59.87 was needed to move on to the semis.
On Tuesday (June 26), Leah Thornton (Helena, AL) and alumnae Megan Brunn(Mansfield) compete in preliminary races. Thornton will swim in the 100 backstroke while Brunn participates in the 100 breaststroke.
