RedHawk Women Claim Miami Invite Behind Four Event Wins

OXFORD, Ohio - In the first of three home meets this year, the Miami University women's track and field team won the 27th annual Miami Invitational Saturday at George Rider Track behind a pair of victories on the track and two more in the field events.
The RedHawks ran away with the title, accumulating 191 points to win by nearly 70 as Mid-American Conference foe Western Michigan was second with 121.5 points while fellow MAC rival Kent State was third with 99.5 points. Findlay was fourth (67), followed by Hillsdale in fifth (49.5) and Ashland in sixth (49) in the 18-team field.
Miami nabbed the top three spots in the 3000m steeplechase led by a pair of freshmen in Elisa Frazier (Williamsville, N.Y.) and Alex Chitwood (Carmel, Ind.) as Frazier clocked 10:55.79 while Chitwood finished in 10:58.99. It was the first 3K steeplechase for each while the times rank them fifth and sixth, respectively, in school history. Sophomore Erica Howes (Fairfax, Va.) was right behind in third in 11:02.25, a personal best. In the 1500m run, senior Kelley Miller (Dublin, Ohio) earned second in 4:27.69, which is the sixth-best time in school history.
The RedHawks won the 4x100m relay as junior Layne Baggett (Pittsburgh, Pa.), senior Diona Graves (Fenton, Mo.), junior Katie Scannell (Cortland, Ohio) and senior Rachael Clay (Rossford, Ohio) combined to clock 46.24, as Clay came from behind on the anchor leg to clock the fifth-best time in school history.
Miami also captured the top three spots in the long jump led by Graves with a leap of 5.74m/18-10 while redshirt sophomore Ashley Zaper (Whitehouse, Ohio) was second with a personal-best leap of 5.67m/18-7.25, which ties her for 10th in school history, and sophomore Erica Mudd (Cincinnati, Ohio) took third, jumping 5.66m/18-7. Senior Krista Stillson (Naperville, Ill.) was fourth in the triple jump with a season-best leap of 10.95m/35-11.25.
Senior Alexandra Roberts (Hilliard, Ohio) continued to perform well in the shot put, winning the event with a toss of 15.32m/50-3.25, which is the second-best throw in school history. She also took third in the discus with a season-best heave of 47.35m/155-4.
In addition to the relay and long jump, Graves was the runner-up in the 200m dash in a season-best 24.43, which is the 10th-best time in school history, while freshman Jasmine Watts (Carmel, Ind.) also earned second in the 100m dash in a personal-best 12.34. Clay was sixth in the 200m dash in a personal-best 25.06.
In the hurdles, Baggett crossed in third in the 100m hurdles in a personal-best 13.69, which ties her for second in school history, while Scannell was also third in the 400m hurdles in 1:02.90. The RedHawks claimed third and fourth in the 400m dash as freshman Charlotte Myers (Bexley, Ohio) was third in 57.73 while sophomore Leah Coleman (Westerville, Ohio) was right behind in a personal-best 57.85. In the 800m, freshman Taylor Wickware (Geneva, Ill.) took sixth in a season-best 2:14.34.
Clay, Myers, Scannell and senior Caroline Kwateng (Brooklyn, N.Y.) combined to take second in the 4x400m relay in 3:47.19.
In other field action, senior Sarah Kinnaman (Carmel, Ind.) was the runner-up in the pole vault, clearing a season-best 3.69m/12-1.25 while sophomore Kori Tatman (Amanda, Ohio) was third, also clearing that height, a season best, but in more attempts.
The RedHawks head to Columbus next weekend for the Jesse Owens Classic, hosted by Ohio State April 13-14. Miami then returns home for two consecutive meets - the All-Ohio Championships and the RedHawk Invitational.
