DES MOINES, Iowa - Two throwers on the Miami University women's track and field team competed at the famed Drake Relays Friday at Drake Stadium as senior Alexandra Roberts and sophomore Tori Paterra represented two-thirds of the RedHawks at the meet.
Roberts (Hilliard, Ohio) finished 15th out of 30 in the shot put with a heave of 15.29m/50-2, which was the same distance as Nebraska's Carlie Pinkelman, who was 14th, but Pinkelman's second-best throw was further than Roberts'. Roberts set the school record in the shot put (15.69m/51-5.75) earlier this year while her throw Saturday is the fourth-best in school history, all owned by Roberts and set this year. She finished ahead of Kent State's Joh'vonnie Mosley, who took 22nd as the only other Mid-American Conference athlete in the event. Oklahoma's Tia Brooks won the competition with a toss of 18.47m/60-7.25, which is a meet record.
Paterra (Elizabeth, Pa.) placed 11th out of 23 in the javelin with a throw of 43.75m/143-6. Oklahoma's Brittany Borman won the javelin with a toss of 54.56m/179-0 but Paterra did finish ahead of Kent State's Sara Oczypok and Cheryl Carlisle, who were 12th and 14th, respectively, as the only other MAC athletes in the event as they rank second and third in the MAC in the javelin this year behind Paterra. Paterra set the school record in the event last year and has a season-best throw of 48.46m/159-0 this year.
The only other RedHawk at the Drake Relays is senior Kelley Miller (Dublin, Ohio), who will run in the 1500m at 6:01 p.m. ET Saturday. The rest of the RedHawks will compete at their final home meet of the year, the RedHawk Invitational, which starts at 11 a.m. Saturday at George Rider Track.
