OXFORD, Ohio - Five Miami University women's swimmers and two RedHawk divers have been named to the 30-person 2012 Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team. Miami's seven first-teamers were more than any other MAC institution.
Sophomore Nikki Craft (Bay Village, 3.47 GPA, majoring in special education), junior Maddie Kete (Bay Village, 3.66 GPA, majoring in business), senior Kelsey Mallon (Wheaton, IL, 3.83 GPA, majoring in speech pathology and audiology), junior Maegan O'Connor (Fishers, IN, 3.54 GPA, majoring in exercise science), junior Leah Thornton (Helena, AL, 3.67, undecided), junior Jenny Warmolts (Upper Arlington, 3.81, majoring in zoology), junior Lisa Werwinski (Canton, 3.98, majoring in mathematics education) and junior Bekka Westrick (Fairfield, 3.24 GPA, majoring in kinesiology) all were named first-team selections.
Craft, O'Connor, Thornton and Westrick also were named to the All-MAC First Team at the 2012 MAC Swimming and Diving Championships. Kete earned second team honors.
Winning honorable mention Academic All-MAC laurels were eight others, including senior Lauren Wallace (Columbus), junior Ellen Barhorst (West Chester), junior Mandi Grandjean (Canton), junior Laura Krueger (Cincinnati), junior Molly Tyler (Birmingham), sophomore Cynthia Donovan (Cincinnati), sophomore Brianna Fujan (Byron, MN) and sophomore KAYLA SCOTT (St. Charles, IL).
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award. Outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments for the current season are only considered.
