OXFORD, Ohio - Head coach Kelly Kovach Schoenly became Miami's all-time winningest softball coach as the RedHawks split a doubleheader with Central Michigan on Friday. Miami won the first game, 4-0, to give Schoenly her 173rd career win. The Chippewas came back to earn a victory in the second game, 2-0. The RedHawks are now 26-16 overall and 7-5 in the Mid-American Conference. CMU is 21-20 overall and 6-7 in the MAC.
Schoenly broke the record of 172 wins set by her immediate predecessor, Angie Jacobs (1999-2006). She is now 173-148-1 in five-plus seasons in charge of Miami.
Jessica Simpson was dominant in game one. She allowed only three hits the entire game, while striking out 12. No Central Michigan batter was able to get further than second base on her. Simpson improved her record to 17-12 on the season with her 87th career win.
The RedHawks got on the board with a run in the bottom of first inning. Shanyn McIntyre led off the frame with a single to center field. An infield single by Kristy Arbour would move her up to second. Three batters later, a single to centerfield by Jordan McElroy would bring McIntyre home and give Miami a 1-0 lead.
It remained that way until the Red and White recorded some insurance runs with three in the bottom of the sixth. With Kayla Ledbetter and Kylie McChesney on base and one out, a single by McIntyre would load the bases. A wild pitch would score Ledbetter. Megan Mattera followed with a walk that reloaded the bases. The Chippewa shortstop then misfielded a Casey Drees grounder, allowing both McChesney and McIntyre to come home and complete the RedHawk scoring.
McIntyre finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Ledbetter was 3-for-3 with one run scored.
Central Michigan's Chelsea Sundberg pitched strongly in game two. She was perfect through the first five innings, until Larrabee hit a single to shortstop to lead off the bottom of the sixth. Mattera would also record a single in that inning, but Miami would be unable to get a run across. The RedHawks would be retired in order in the bottom of the seventh.
The Chippewas were able to get single runs in the second and third innings off starter Katie Osburn. After they loaded the bases in the top of the fifth with only one out, Simpson would come back in. She retired the next two batters and did not allow a hit in her 2.2 innings pitched. She struck out three.
Miami returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Eastern Michigan at 2 p.m.
