KALAMAZOO, Mich. - A tough fifth inning for the Miami University softball team resulted in a 5-1 defeat at the hands of Western Michigan Sunday afternoon. The RedHawks fall to 19-12 overall and 2-2 in the Mid-American Conference. The Broncos improve to 12-10 overall and 2-0 in the MAC.
After the first three innings were scoreless, Miami struck first in the top of the fourth inning. Kristy Arbour led off the frame with a single through the left side. After a flyout, Tiyona Marshall sacrificed her over to second base. Arbour then moved up to third on a wild pitch. Kylie McChesney brought her home with a double to center field.
RedHawk starter Paige Myers no-hit Western Michigan through the first four innings. In the bottom of the fifth, Jen Tschetter led off with a single to left field to end the no-hit bid. After a sacrifice bunt moved her up, the next two batters walked to load the bases with one out. Diana Patterson would follow with a double to left center that cleared the bases and put the Broncos in front, 3-1. Jessica Simpson would come in to relieve Myers, but WMU would add two more runs to complete the scoring for the day.
