TAMPA, Fla. -- Freshmen Alix Thurman and Christine Guerrazzi earned singles victories, but that was all Miami could manage in a 5-2 loss to 42nd-ranked South Florida Thursday afternoon at the USF Varsity Courts.

The match lasted over five hours with four singles matches extending to a third set and three sets overall going to a tiebreaker.

South Florida (9-5) swept the doubles point to open a 1-0 lead. The Bulls swept at No. 1, but had to fight for an 8-6 victory at No. 3. The final match was stopped at 8-7.

Singles started with wins at No. 2 and No. 1 for the Bulls, pushing the lead to 3-0, but Miami got on the board with a win at No. 6. Guerrazzi squeezed out a 7-6, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4) victory, her third straight and fourth in five outings. USF clinched the match with wins at No.3 and No. 4 before Thurman defeated her opponent, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 5.

Miami (5-9) returns to action on March 23 when it opens league play. The RedHawks put their 24-match conference winning streak on the line when they travel to Akron, the team that upset them in the 2011 MAC Championship.
