An exciting week for Miami athletics saw the winter sports wrap up their regular seasons, while the spring sports earned a couple of upsets over nationally ranked opponents.
SYNCHRONIZED SKATING
Last Week: Winning its eighth consecutive national crown on Saturday evening at the 2012 U.S. National Championships, Miami University's collegiate synchronized skating team tied figure skater Michelle Kwan's record of eight-straight national titles. The RedHawks had already set the record for most consecutive national titles at any level of synchronized skating in 2011.This is the 14th national title for the collegiate team, with their string of consecutive national crowns dating back to the 2004-05 season. (RECAP) The senior team placed third in its competition, while the junior team placed seventh (DAY 1 RECAP) (DAY 2 RECAP) (SENIOR FINAL RECAP) This Week: This completes the competition season for the teams. They will perform in the Miami University Ice Show, Apr. 20-21.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
Last Week: The RedHawks (9-20 overall, 5-11 MAC) dropped both games last week to complete the regular season. On Wednesday night, it was a tie game with less than three minutes remaining, but Miami was unable to come away with a victory against Bowling Green falling by a score of 56-51. Senior forward Julian Mavunga recorded his 28th career double-double, scoring a game-high 17 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Sophomore center Drew McGhee scored 13 points off the bench, his highest scoring output since a career-high 16 points at Kent State earlier this season. Sophomore forward Jon Harris and guard Quinten Rollins round out the other RedHawks in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively. (RECAP) Miami celebrated the careers of seniors Julian Mavunga and Adam Thomas on Saturday afternoon, but the Ohio Bobcats came in and spoiled the celebration, defeating the `Hawks by a score of 63-54. Freshman guard Brian Sullivan led the RedHawks with 11 points today, while senior forward Adam Thomas added a career-high 10 points. (RECAP) (PHOTO GALLERY)This Week: Miami is the 10th seed in the Mid-American Conference Tournament and will travel to seventh-seed Toledo on Monday at 7 p.m. in an attempt to continue its season. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Last Week: Senior Rachael Hencke made it a Senior Night to remember when she hit a running layup with 5.4 seconds remaining to lift Miami (21-8 overall, 11-5 MAC) to a 51-49 victory over rival Ohio in the regular-season finale Tuesday night at Millett Hall. It was the team's only action this past week. Courtney Osborn led the team with 14 points total. Prior to the game, Hencke, Maggie Boyer and Lillian Pitts were all honored in a pregame ceremony. (RECAP) (PHOTO GALLERY) After the contest, the Mid-American Conference released the 2012 MAC Tournament Bracket (RELEASE). This Week: Miami is the fourth seed in the MAC Tournament and has received a bye straight to the quarterfinals. The RedHawks will be in action on Thursday at noon against the winner of the second round contest between fifth-seed Central Michigan and eighth-seed Ohio on Wednesday. With a win, Miami will take on top-seed Bowling Green on Friday at noon. The MAC Championship is Saturday at 1 p.m.
BASEBALL
Last Week: Miami went 1-2 during a three-game series with Ole Miss this past weekend. John Crummy had a career-high three hits and drove in three runs, lifting Miami (4-5) to a 9-8 win over 16th-ranked Ole Miss Friday night at Swayze Field. Alex Johnson was 4-for-5 and scored once, while Matt Honchel added three hits and two runs scored. The win was the first against a ranked team since a 6-2 win at No. 13 Texas on March 9, 2007. (RECAP) The next day, Miami fell behind 6-0 after two innings and never recovered in an 11-1 loss to the Rebels Saturday afternoon at Swayze Field. Matt Honchel registered two of the RedHawks' eight hits in the contest. (RECAP) Miami's Shawn Marquardt held 16th-ranked Ole Miss to six hits and two runs over seven innings, but a late rally fell just short in a 2-1 loss to the Rebels Sunday afternoon at Swayze Field. The RedHawks had seven hits of three Rebel pitchers, including three in the ninth when they scored their run. (RECAP) Earlier in the week, senior Shawn Marquardt was named Mid-American Conference East Division Pitcher of the Week. The Carmel, Ind., native was also selected as MAC Player of the Week by College Sports Madness. (RELEASE) This Week: Miami continues its spring break road trip this week, moving to Florida for five games in as many days starting Tuesday. The RedHawks face Villanova at noon in Port Charlotte.
SOFTBALL
Last Week: Playing some tough competition, the softball team went 3-2 at the Under Armour Invitational over the weekend. Some timely hits and a great tag-team pitching performance from Paige Myers and Jessica Simpson led the Miami University softball team (10-4) to a 2-1 upset victory over 23rd-ranked USF Sunday in eight innings. The game completed play at the Under Armour Invitational and was the third straight game the RedHawks had gone to extra innings in. (RECAP) On Friday, the softball team earned a split in its first day at the Under Armour Invitational. The RedHawks fell to Boston College, 3-1, in their opening game, but rebounded to defeat Loyola Marymount, 7-2, in the nightcap. (RECAP) On Saturday, Miami went extra innings in both games, coming away with a split. The RedHawks fell to Quinnipiac, 3-2, in 10 innings in the opener. They then defeated Harvard, 2-1, in eight innings. (RECAP) Earlier in the week, Simpson picked up the first MAC East Division Pitcher of the Week honor for the 2012 season, the 11th of her career (RELEASE) This Week: Miami will remain in the Clearwater, Fla. area during the duration of spring break. Next up is a special exhibition contest against the Dutch National Team on Tuesday at 5 p.m. The RedHawks will then take on Penn State on Wednesday at 1 p.m. Over the weekend, the Red and White will play five games at the Under Armour Showcase Tournament.
MEN'S SWIMMING
Last Week: Miami Men's Swimming and Diving finished fifth at the MAC Championships as Eastern Michigan rallied past Buffalo for the league championship Saturday night at the Nixon Aquatic Center. Senior James Beres led the RedHawks as he earned his second runner-up finish of the meet en route to Second Team All-MAC honors. Joe Baumgartner and Alex Reinhardt joined him on the All-MAC Second Team. (DAY 3 RECAP) Hosting the Mid-American Conference Championships for the first time since 2005, Miami posted personal bests in 14 of the team's 18 entries in the morning session and followed it up with strong performances in the evening to stand in fourth place at the end of the first day of competition. (DAY 1 RECAP) Senior Brendan Melling led Miami with a second-place swim as the RedHawks had 13 scoring swims on the day. Melling turned in a career-best time of 3:55.57, an improvement of more than a second from his previous best. Defending champ, Eastern Michigan senior Troy Esentan took the top spot with a time of 3:53.14. Miami junior Alex Reinhardt also earned a spot in the top eight with a personal-best time of 4:00.87. Due to severe weather in the area, Friday night's finals session of the Mid-American Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at the Nixon Aquatic Center was cancelled and the results of the morning's prelims served as timed-finals results. (DAY 2 RECAP) This Week: The season is complete for the swimmers. The divers are awaiting to find out if they have earned selection into the NCAA Regionals this Friday and Saturday in Bloomington, Ind.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Last Week: Freshman Christine Guerrazzi gutted out a three-set win in the sixth and final singles match to earn the final point and clinch a 4-3 victory for the Miami University tennis team over visiting Louisville, Saturday afternoon at the Riverside Racquet Club. It was the first home match for the RedHawks (4-8) in over a month and first in eight matches. Miami improved to 3-0 at home this year while the Cardinals fell to 5-6 overall. (RECAP)This Week: The RedHawks head to Florida for spring break as they'll face Hillsborough Community College March 7 at 9:30 a.m. before taking on South Florida the next day at 2 p.m. Those matches start a stretch of six straight road contests, as Miami opens MAC play with four consecutive road matches.
ICE HOCKEY
Last Week: The team was idle as the RedHawks earned a bye to the second round of the CCHA tournament. Despite the off week, the team still made news as for the second time this season, Miami players captured three of four weekly honors from the Central Collegiate Hockey Association in the same week as junior forward Reilly Smith, senior goalie Connor Knapp and freshman forward Jimmy Mullin were all recognized, the league office announced Monday. Smith earned Postgame Offensive Player of the Week, Knapp captured Goaltender of the Week and Mullin won Gongshow Rookie of the Week. The RedHawks are the only team this season to have won three of four CCHA weekly awards in the same week, also doing it Jan. 23 when Smith, Knapp and freshman forward Austin Czarnik claimed the accolades. (RELEASE) On Thursday, Knapp was also named CCHA Goalkeeper of the Month (RELEASE) This Week: The fourth-seeded RedHawks will host fifth-seeded Michigan State in a quarterfinal series March 9-11 at Steve Cady Arena. The game on March 9 will start at 7:35 p.m. while March 10 and 11 (if necessary) will be at 7:05 p.m.
Several NFL scouts flocked to Oxford, Ohio and Yager Stadium Thursday as the Miami University football team hosted its annual Pro Day for departing seniors to work out and show off their skills to NFL personnel. (RELEASE) (PHOTO GALLERY)
