KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Miami University softball team made a spirited comeback attempt in the top of the seventh inning, but a pair of home runs doomed the RedHawks fell to Western Michigan, 3-2, on Saturday. The RedHawks fall to 19-11 overall and 2-1 in the Mid-American Conference. The Broncos improve to 12-10 overall and 1-0 in the MAC.
WMU's starting pitcher Meredith Whitney led off the bottom of the first with a home run off Miami starter Jessica Simpson to put the Broncos in front. It remained that way until the bottom of the fifth when Tara Buchanan hit a two-run home run to give them a 3-0 lead.
Meanwhile, Whitney held the RedHawks off the board, allowing only two hits through the first six innings. With one out in the top of the seventh, Miami made its comeback attempt. Jordan McElroy was able to get on base by drawing a walk. Daniela Torres would hit a deep double to left center field that brought home McElroy. Shanyn McIntyre followed with a double to nearly the same location that scored Torres and made it 3-2. Remy Edwards then pinch-hit and sent a single over the second baseman's glove that put runners on first and third with only one out. Whitney bore down and would force a strikeout and a fly out to right field to retire the side and give the Broncos the victory.
Torres finished the game 1-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored. Simpson took the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits, while striking out seven.
