HOCKEY
Last Week: The RedHawks (24-14-2) are coming off a third-place finish at the CCHA Tournament, falling to Western Michigan, 6-2, in Friday's semifinal (RECAP), before rebounding with a 4-1 win over Bowling Green in the consolation game Saturday. Junior forward Reilly Smith was named to the CCHA All-Tournament Team for the second straight year. (RECAP) Senior Connor Knapp was tabbed the CCHA Best Goaltender, while senior goaltender Cody Reichard earned the CCHA Ilitch Humanitarian Award. Smith was a First-Team All-CCHA selection and won the Perani Cup, while freshman forward Austin Czarnik was named to the CCHA All-Rookie Team and senior forward Alden Hirschfeld was recognized as a CCHA Scholar-Athlete of the Year nominee. (RELEASE) Smith also was tabbed one of 10 finalists for the Hobey Baker Award (RELEASE), while Reichard was named a finalist for the Wooden Cup Award. (RELEASE) This Week: For the seventh straight year, the No. 7/8 Miami hockey team is headed to the NCAA Tournament as the RedHawks earned a No. 2 seed in the East Regional and will face third-seeded UMass-Lowell in the first round on Friday, March 23 at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Conn. SOFTBALL
Last Week: Miami (15-9) went 4-0 to claim the Miami Invitational title with senior infielder Daniela Torres earning MVP honors for the tournament. Senior pitcher Jessica Simpson threw the first prefect game of her career Sunday as the RedHawks defeated Dayton in six innings, 8-0. (RECAP) A seventh-inning home run by freshman shortstop Kylie McChesney lifted Miami to a 1-0 win over Loyola on Saturday. (RECAP) Miami started the tournament with a pair five-inning, run-rule wins, defeating Niagara 10-0 and Dayton, 9-0, in its home openers. (RECAP) Congratulations to sophomore second baseman Kristy Arbour was tabbed the MAC East Division Player of the Week last week for her performance at the Under Armour Showcase the previous week. (RELEASE) This Week: Miami plays just once this week as the RedHawks head to Butler for a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Thursday, March 22.
BASEBALL
Last Week: Miami (11-8) opened its home slate going 4-1 last week at McKie Field at Hayden Park. Sophomore Charles Zubrod collected his first collegiate win while senior outfielder Bryce Redeker notched three hits and three runs as Miami defeated Canisius, 6-2, last Tuesday. (RECAP) The RedHawks completed the sweep of the Golden Griffins as they rallied from a 6-0 deficit with nine runs in the fourth inning and then outlasted Canisius in a 13-10 slugfest Wednesday evening. (RECAP) Freshman Scott Slappey's pinch-hit RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted Miami to a 6-5 victory and doubleheader sweep of Morehead State Saturday afternoon. Miami collected a 3-1 victory against the Eagles in the opener. (RECAP) Miami took a 2-0 lead into the fifth inning, but a seven-run outburst by Morehead State led to a 15-2 victory over the RedHawks Sunday afternoon. (RECAP) This Week: Miami travels to Xavier for a 3 p.m. game on Tuesday, March 20 before hosting the Musketeers in a 6 p.m. game on Wednesday, March 21. An audio broadcast of Wednesday's game will be carried on the internet via MSNi. The RedHawks open Mid-American Conference play with a three-game series at Eastern Michigan this weekend.
MEN'S TRACK & FIELD
Last Week: Although the entire Miami University men's track and field team does not start its outdoor season until this weekend, two RedHawks got their season started on a strong note as senior Jordan Goffena and freshman Sam Chester each competed in the decathlon at the Charlotte 49er Classic Thursday and Friday at UNC-Charlotte's Irwin Belk Track. Goffena won the decathlon with a personal-best total of 7,009 points, topping his previous best of 6,994. He already ranked fifth in school history in the event. (RECAP) This Week: The entire Miami team begins outdoor competition this weekend as the RedHawks travel to Nashville, Tenn. for the Vanderbilt Black & Gold Invitational, March 23-24.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Last Week: Earning a berth in the WNIT, Miami (21-10) traveled to Richmond for a first-round game last Thursday, falling to the Spiders 76-54. Senior guard Maggie Boyer paced the RedHawks with 20 points. (RECAP) The Women's Basketball Coaches Association announced Thursday its All-Region nominees for the Division I Coaches' All-America Team. Miami junior guard Courtney Osborn was selected as one of the nominees from Region 4. (RELEASE) Osborn earned First-Team All-MAC honors, while Boyer and junior forward Kirsten Olowinski were each named All-MAC Third Team. (RELEASE) This Week: Season Concluded.
For the second consecutive year, Miami University senior forward Julian Mavunga was named to the All-District 14 Team by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). Mavunga was one of five Mid-American Conference players to earn first-team distinction from the NABC in 2011-12. He was a second-team honoree as a junior. (RELEASE) Mavunga captured All-MAC honors for the third time in his career, earning first-team recognition for the second straight season, while freshman guard Brian Sullivan was named to the MAC All-Freshman Team, becoming the first Miami player since 2003 to be named to the MAC All-Freshman team. (RELEASE)
Women's track and field opens its outdoor season at the Vanderbilt Black & Gold Invitational, March 23-24, while women's tennis returns to action at Akron and Buffalo this Friday and Saturday, respectively, to open Mid-American Conference play. The men's golf team also is in action twice this week as the RedHawks play in the UCF Rio Pinar Invitational March 19-20 and then compete in the FAU Spring Break Championship March 23-25.
