GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Senior Shawn Marquardt struck out a career-high seven and scattered three hits in a 1-0 complete-game gem Sunday afternoon, lifting Miami to a 1-0 win over Michigan State in the First Pitch Invitational. Marquardt's previous best was five strikeouts last year against Indiana.
Miami (3-3) scored the game's only run by capitalizing on a Spartan error in the third. With two outs, Ryan Brenner walked. Matt Honchel bounced a slow roller to short on a hit-and-run, sending Brenner to third. But when the first baseman threw wildly for the out, Brenner was able to come home.
Bryce Redeker, Alex Johnson and Brenner had Miami's other three hits. Michigan State (4-2) had a pair of doubles and a ninth-inning single.
The game was delayed by 1:44 after a scheduling issue left both teams on the field with no umpires. When a replacement crew was found, neither pitcher seemed to be affected. Mike Theodore (0-1) took the loss for Michigan State, allowing just four hits and the unearned run. He struck out five and walked a pair.
"That was one of the best pitching performances I have seen at Miami," Miami coach Dan Simonds said.
Miami returns to action next weekend at Ole Miss, starting its annual spring break trip.
