CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Junior first baseman Kevin Bower has been named Mid-American Conference East Division Player of the Week, the league office announced today. The award is the first for the Indianapolis, Ind., native.
Bower helped Miami to a 2-1 series win at Furman on opening weekend, by batting .636 with one home run and six runs batted in. He was 7-for-11 overall, reached safely in all three games to run hitting streak to seven games dating back to last year.
Bower has multiple hits in both games of Saturday's doubleheader, tying his career high with four hits in game one of the twinbill. He added two hits - both doubles - in the nightcap, driving in a career-best four RBIs. Bower finished the weekend with a slugging percentage of 1.091 and an on-base percentage of .643, plus scored four times, walked twice and had a sacrifice fly. In the field, he was perfect, recording 27 putouts at first base.
The MAC's other honorees for week one were David Starn of Kent State (East Division pitcher), Will Arnold of Central Michigan (West Division player) and Ball State's Cal Bowling (West Division pitcher).
Miami heads back to South Carolina this weekend to participate in the Greenville Drive's First Pitch Invitational. The RedHawks meet Michigan State on Friday and Sunday and face Furman again on Saturday.
