Great Comeback Leads RedHawks to Overtime Win Over Kent State

KENT, Ohio - Trailing 46-35 with 11:27 to go Wednesday at Kent State, the Miami RedHawk women's basketball team went a spirited comeback led by Courtney Osborn and Hannah Robertson. With three seconds remaining, Osborn calmly sank two free throws to send the game into overtime. Miami would take control from there, as it would go on to defeat the Golden Flashes, 69-65. The RedHawks improve to 18-7 overall and 8-4 in the Mid-American Conference. The Golden Flashes fall to 5-17 overall and 4-8 in the MAC.

Robertson would finish with a career-high 21 points, while Osborn contributed 16.

Osborn led off the game with a three-point basket. Kent State responded with three treys of its own, as it built a 14-6 lead with 14:10 to go. Miami fought right back as Erica Almady hit two layups, while Lillian Pitts hit a jumper as part of a 10-0 run to put the RedHawks back in front. The lead was short lived however, as an 8-4 run put the Golden Flashes up by four at 24-20 at the 5:14 mark.

A Pitts layup and a Hannah Robertson three-pointer put the RedHawks up, 25-24 with 2:16 to go. The lead changed four more times, with Hannah Robertson hitting a layup off a pass from her sister Haley Robertson to put Miami up, 29-28, going into the break.

The RedHawks hit 41.9 percent (13-for-31) during the first half. They saw balanced scoring, as eight different players recorded points during the period. Miami forced Kent State into 13 turnovers during the frame.

Hannah Robertson hit another jumper to give the Red and White a three-point lead early in the second half. Miami's shot would go cold, as a three-pointer from the Golden Flashes would spark a 16-4 run to give Kent State its largest lead at 46-35 and set the stage for the RedHawks' comeback.

After the teams traded layups, a three-pointer from Osborn made it 48-40 at the 9:27 mark. A layup from Hannah Robertson, along with free throws from herand Rachael Hencke would make it a three-point game at 48-45. The Golden Flashes would score the next four points to push the advantage back to seven with 5:57 to go.

Jumpers from Hencke and Hannah Robertson helped pull Miami to within three at 54-51. After a defensive stop, Maggie Boyer found Osborn for a layup to make it 54-53 with 1:54 remaining. Neither team could score until Kent State hit a layup to go back up three with 32 seconds to go. Pitts was fouled making a shot with 14 seconds remaining to make it 56-55, but she would miss the subsequent free throw. After the RedHawks fouled, Dana Droste converted one of her two freebies to make it 57-55 with 10 seconds remaining. Osborn was fouled on her subsequent drive and converted both free throws to send the game into overtime.

A three-pointer from Hannah Robertson off a great pass from Pitts a minute into the extra frame would set the tone for the period. After trading free throws, a layup by Osborn would give the RedHawks a five-point advantage with 2:47 to go. Kent State did not give up, as it hit back-to-back layups to pull within one at 63-62 with 1:41 remaining.

On the Golden Flashes next possession, Hannah Robertson would come up with a huge steal. She would follow with a jumper to make it 65-62 with 55 seconds to go. Osborn would get another steal 30 seconds later, and she would hit four free throws down the stretch to secure the 69-65 victory.

Hannah Robertson hit 9-for-14 with two triples to make up her career-high 21 point total. Pitts nearly had a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds. Miami recorded a season-high 17 steals in the win and outrebounded the Golden Flashes, 42-33.

The RedHawks continue on the road as they head to Buffalo on Saturday for a 2 p.m. game.
