OXFORD, Ohio - Two-time Mid-American Conference Diver of the Year JIM BERES (Columbus) and current MAC Swimmer of the Week Brendan Melling (Solon) plus three of their senior classmates will be honored prior to Miami's home dual meet against Eastern Michigan this Saturday (Feb. 4).
Senior/Parent introductions begin at 10:40 a.m., then the starting gun for the first event sounds at 11 a.m. There will be no admission charge at the Nixon Aquatic Center.
In addition to Beres and Melling, fellow seniors Chris Gunnels (Chapel Hill, NC), Ryan Neff (Chesterland) and Kegan Rogers (Libertyville, IL) also will be honored before the meet.
Beres, who has won three Mid-American Conference titles during his career, has been a model of consistency for the last three seasons. Beres holds the Miami pool and MAC meet records, and he'll be the favorite on March 1-3 when the RedHawks host the MAC Championships.
Melling earned his first-career MAC Swimmer of the Week award, the conference office announced Wednesday morning. He led the RedHawks to a 134-107 road win over MAC-foe Ball State on Saturday, Jan. 28, with a pair of first-place finishes. EMU brings another top team to Oxford on Saturday.
Though the Eagles are just 3-3 in 2011-12 dual meets, Eastern will seek its 60th consecutive MAC dual-meet victory. The Eagles have not lost a conference meet since the 1997-98 campaign.
Saturday's meet features a 16-event program, including the 200 medley relay, the 200 IM, and the 400 freestyle relay. The diving events will run concurrently.
