CLEVELAND, Ohio - Brendan Melling earned his first-career Mid-American Conference Swimmer of the Week award, the conference office announced Wednesday morning. The senior from Solon, Ohio led the RedHawks to a 134-107 road win over MAC-foe Ball State on Saturday, Jan. 28 with a pair of first-place finishes. He joins fellow senior James Beres as the second RedHawk to earn MAC Swimmer of the Week honors this season.
Melling took to the pool in event five, the 400-yard IM, with the RedHawks trailing the Cardinals 42-32. When he cruised into the wall in a time of 4:09.30, more than six seconds ahead of his closest competitor, he earned nine points to help close the gap. In his next event, the 500-yard freestyle, Miami held a slim 85-83 lead, but Melling's first-place finish, in a time of 4:46.91, extended the team's lead and propelled the RedHawks to the win.
Melling and the rest of head coach Pete Lindsay's RedHawks take on the Eastern Michigan Eagles on Saturday, Feb. 4 in the teams final dual meet of the season before hosting the MAC Championships March 1-3.
