Men's Swimmers Beat Ball State

MUNCIE, Indiana -- Miami's men's swimming team won Saturday (Jan. 28) at Ball State, 134-107, as seniors James Beres (Columbus) and BRENDAN MELLING (Solon) both won two events apiece.
Beres placed first on both the one- and three-meter boards, while Melling finished first in the 400 individual medley and the 500 freestyle.
The reigning two-time Mid-American Conference Diver of the Year had excellent scores in both the one-meter event (348.90 points) and on the three-meter board (372.15).
Melling won the 400 individual medley (4:09.30) and the 500 freestyle (4:46.91) in impressive fashion.
Freshman ANDY KILKENNY (Manchester, MO) won the first individual event of the meet, touching first in the 1000 freestyle in a time of 9:57.04.
Junior Ian Joyce (Hampden, MA) placed first in the 200 freestyle, touring the pool in a time of 1:45.08.
Sophomore Mike Kline (Fort Wayne, IN) captured top honors in the 200 backstroke (1:54.81).
The remaining RedHawk victory was the 200 freestyle relay foursome of Chris Gunnels (Chapel Hill, NC), Joyce, Mike Cavanaugh (Bowling Green) and Dan Nemeth (Highland Heights).
Coach PETE LINDSAY's RedHawks improved their record to 5-6 overall and 2-2 vs. MAC opponents.
Miami faces Eastern Michigan next Saturday at the Nixon Aquatic Center, with the action beginning at 1 p.m.
The RedHawks host the MAC Men's Swimming and Diving Championships on March 1-3.
