HAMILTON, Ohio -- Miami captured the doubles point and five of six singles matches Sunday, completing a weekend sweep of local rivals, 6-1 over Cincinnati at the Riverside Racquet Club. Yesterday, the RedHawks swept Xavier 7-0 for its first win of the season.
Doubles play started with a Miami win at No. 2 when Riekie Honiball and Christine Guerrazzi defeated Sierra Sullivan and Safiyya Ismail 8-2. The RedHawk duo won five straight games after a splitting the first two enroute to the convincing victory.
But the Nos. 1 and 3 matches were tightly contested. Cincinnati's Jasmine Lee and Ashleigh Witte opened a 5-1 lead in the top flight, but RedHawks Stephanie Danesis and Jessica Parr won seven of the next eight games to steal an 8-6 victory, breaking in the final game. Meanwhile, Nimisha Mohan and Ramona Costea of Miami jumped ahead 4-2, only to see Carly Wilson and Kristina Georgivia storm back for to take 5-4 and 6-5 leads. But Costea held serve and Miami broke, allowing Mohan to serve out the match, 8-6.
It didn't take long in singles for Miami to even its season record at 2-2. Danesis put the RedHawks ahead 2-0 with a quick 6-1, 6-2 win over Georgivia at No. 2, then Christiana Raymond cruised past Sullivan 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5. Alix Thurman secured Miami's deciding point with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Ismail, winning the final 11 games of the match.
Guerrazzi added to the lead with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Wilson at No. 6. Cincinnati (0-2) picked up its only point at No. 3 when Witte scored a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Honiball. But moments later, Mohan gained the final point for Miami, earning a 6-4, 6-2 win over Lee at No. 1.
"I think coming back for the doubles point gave the team a lot of momentum heading into singles," Danesis said. "We brought a lot of energy to singles play and didn't let them back in the match. It was a good weekend with us winning two matches."
Miami faces its next seven matches on the road beginning Feb. 5 at Kentucky.
