MUNCIE, Indiana -- Two individual victories by junior Bekka Westrick (Fairfield) and eight more first-place finishes by eight other athletes helped Miami's women's swimming and diving team top unbeaten Ball State Friday night, 178-122.
Coach Dave Jennings' RedHawks improved their record to 5-2, while the Cardinals slipped to 9-1.
In addition to Westrick's victories in the 50 freestyle (24.03) and the 100 free (52.28), she also swam with Miami's two victorious relay units. Her lead-off leg of 53.01 in the 400 freestyle relay and her anchor leg of 23.53 in the 200 medley relay both helped Miami's squads to touch the wall first.
Contributing 16 individual points was Stacie Clagg (Canton), a first-place finisher in the 400 individual medley (4:34.69), a runner-up in the 200 breaststroke (2:22.79) and a third-place finisher in the 100 breast (1:06.36).
The RedHawks got 13 points apiece from Leah Thornton (Helena, AL), Maegan O'Connor (Fishers, IN) and Jenny Warmolts (Upper Arlington). Thornton's highlight was a victory in the 200 backstroke (2:04.80). O'Connor won the 100 butterfly (55.85) and Warmolts was victorious in the 1000 freestyle (10:32.91).
Scoring 12 points each were divers Nikki Craft (Bay Village) and Lacey Houser (Danville, IN). Craft won the competition on the three-meter board (305.92). Houser, diving for only the second time as a RedHawk, captured first at one-meter (286.35).
Kelsey Mallon (Wheaton, IL) and Chelsey Bruington (Mission Viejo, CA) tallied 11 individual points apiece, winning respective races in the 200 butterfly (2:05.63) and the 200 freestyle (1:54.47).
Others claiming second-place finishes Friday night for the RedHawks were Courtney Collett (Hilton Head Island, SC) in the 100 free, Thornton in the 100 back, KAYLA SCOTT (St. Charles, IL) in the 100 breaststroke, O'Connor in the 200 fly, Cynthia Donovan (Cincinnati) in the 50 free, Warmolts in the 500 free and Molly Tyler (Birmingham, MI) in the 400 IM.
Miami will have two more road meets next weekend, competing at Eastern Michigan on Friday (Jan. 27, 4 p.m.), then at Bowling Green on Saturday (Jan. 28, 1 p.m.).
