It was a busy week for Miami Athletics with several teams returning to action after the holiday break and one starting the traditional portion of the yearly schedule.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Last Week: Winter hit Oxford in earnest this week, but the RedHawks remained red-hot, extending their winning streak to 10 games with a pair of victories. The double-digit success run is the sixth in school history and ranks fifth in the country among active streaks. A strong all-around effort from Miami's three leading scorers led the Red and White a 73-55 win over Kent State on Wednesday. Courtney Osborn led the way with 20 points and eight assists, while Kristen Olowinski nearly had another double-double with 18 points and nine rebounds. Maggie Boyer finished with 17 points. (RECAP) On Sunday, Maggie Boyer led a balanced RedHawk effort with 15 points as the RedHawks improved to 14-3 overall and a perfect 4-0 in the Mid-American Conference with a 67-47 victory over Ohio. Hannah Robertson added 12 points, while Haley Robertson added 10. Olowinski just missed a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds. (RECAP) This Week: It's a showdown of the two remaining undefeated teams in MAC play on Thursday when Miami hosts Bowling Green at 7 p.m., then the RedHawks face their first interdivision game against Western Michigan Sunday at 2.
ICE HOCKEY
Last Week: Miami wrapped up a four-game road trip with a split at No. 19 Lake Superior State over the weekend. In the opener, Miami (12-10-2, 8-8-2-1 CCHA) rallied from an early deficit with two second-period goals for a 2-1 victory over the Lakers. Connor Knapp made 25 saves, while Alden Hirschfeld and Reilly Smith each found the net for the RedHawks. (RECAP) On Saturday, freshman Jimmy Mullin scored two goals and Miami dominated the third period but was unable to complete a comeback in a 4-3 loss. The RedHawks outshot LSSU 46-26, including 18-2 in the final segment. (RECAP) This Week: After playing nine of 10 on the road, Miami opens a four-game homestand when it faces Western Michigan. Faceoffs are slated for 7:35 p.m. on Friday and 7:05 on Saturday.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
Last Week: Miami split a pair of games this week, falling on the road but winning at home. On Wednesday, Miami held a late lead at Kent State, but the Golden Flashes ended the game on a 7-0 run for a 71-67 victory. Sophomore Drew McGhee poured in a career-high 16 points, doubling his previous best, while senior Julian Mavunga chipped in 14 points, four assists, three steals and two blocked shots. (RECAP) Freshman Brian Sullivan tallied 17 points on Saturday, helping Miami to a thrilling 52-51 victory over Buffalo. Quinten Rollins chipped in 13 points, while Drew McGhee added 11 for the RedHawks (5-10, 1-2). (RECAP) This Week: Miami wraps up the first rotation of East Division play with a pair of games. The RedHawks host Bowling Green Wednesday at 7, then travel to Ohio on Saturday.
SYNCHRONIZED SKATING
Last Week: The senior and collegiate teams returned to action this weekend, winning their respective divisions at the Mid-American Championships. The collegiate team amassed a score of 89.99, more than five points better than its season opening score at the Dr. Porter Classic. After finishing first in the short program event with a score of 60.98, the RedHawk senior team again dominated with a first-place finish in the free skate. Miami earned a score of 107.29, bettering Western Michigan by more than 30 points. (RECAP) This Week: The teams are off from competition this weekend, but will perform exhibitions during intermission of both hockey games.
MEN's SWIMMING
Last Week: In one of its best efforts of the season so far, Miami defeated arch-rival Cincinnati Friday evening, 181-118. Coach Pete Lindsay's squad evened its record at 4-4, thanks to a double win by senior diver James Beres, single victories by Alex Reinhardt, Brendan Melling, Mike Cavanaugh, Joe Baumgartner, Dan Nemeth, Chris Gunnels and Logan Emery, plus a 200 freestyle triumph by the foursome of Baumgarter, Sam Childs, Sam Reeder and Nemeth. (RECAP) This Week: Miami's men continue their season on the road, competing against Cleveland State on Friday and at Buffalo on Saturday.
WOMEN'S SWIMMING
Last Week: Eleven individual event victories by Coach Dave Jennings' RedHawk women's swimming and diving team led Miami (4-2) past rival Cincinnati, 184-111. Four members of the Red & White captured two individual events each -- Courtney Collett, Maegan O'Connor, Bekka Westrick and Nikki Craft -- while three others collected one victory apiece. (RECAP) This Week: Miami travels to Ball State next Friday to try to improve its record to 2-1 in Mid-American Conference duals.
WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
Last Week: Despite not competing for over a month, the women's track and field team had a strong showing at the BGSU Team Challenge Saturday, taking second place behind a pair of event wins and six runner-up finishes. The RedHawks finished with 122 points while Western Michigan won the seven-team meet with 151.66 points. (RECAP) This Week: The RedHawks return to action Friday and Saturday at Indiana University's Gladstein Invitational.
TENNIS
Last Week: Miami opened the dual-meet portion of its schedule with a pair of matches against nationally-ranked opponents, coming up short in both outings. On Saturday, the RedHawks dropped a 6-1 decision at No. 15 Vanderbilt. Freshman Katherine Castro earned Miami's only point, although Stephanie Danesis and Jessica Parr won their doubles match. (RECAP) On Sunday, Memphis swept all nine matches from the RedHawks to post a 7-0 victory. (RECAP) This Week: Miami opens is home schedule against local rivals Xavier and Cincinnati at Riverside Racquet Club in Hamilton. The RedHawks face the Musketeers Satursday at 2 p.m. and the Bearcats Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
