Skaters Sweep Mid-America Championships

FRASER, Mich.--Miami University's senior and collegiate synchronized skating teams swept the Mid-America Championships with both teams posting first-place finishes on Sunday.
The collegiate team amassed a score of 89.99, more than five points better than its season opening score at the Dr. Porter Classic, and once again put together a dominant performance. With their program set to music by Beyonce, the RedHawks topped their nearest competitor by more than 10 points with Delaware coming in second with a score of 79.02. Michigan followed with a score of 72.89 with Western Michigan (63.08), Spartan Synchronized Skating (60.90), Adrian (60.57), Wisconsin (56.10) and Illini Skating (44.85) rounding out the collegiate field.
After finishing first in the short program event with a score of 60.98, the RedHawk senior team again dominated with a first-place finish in the free skate. Miami earned a score of 107.29 for its free skate program themed Gypsy, again bettering Western Michigan by more than 30 points. Western Michigan posted a 76.07 for its free skate program after notching a 29.98 for its short program. There were just two teams in the senior field at the Mid-America Championships.
The senior and collegiate teams will have exhibition performances at the Miami hockey games next Friday and Saturday, respectively. The junior team will be the next RedHawk team to compete, traveling to the Mozart Cup International in Salzburg, Austria Jan. 27-29.
Miami's senior team travels to Rouen, France Feb. 2-4 for the French Cup International, while the collegiate team makes another trip to Fraser, Mich. for the Tri-State Championships Feb. 11. Those will be the last competitions for the RedHawks before the U.S. National Championships March 1-3 in Worchester, Mass.
