OXFORD, Ohio - The 2012 portion of the '11-12 season starts with a bang this Friday afternoon as arch-rival Cincinnati comes to Miami University's Nixon Aquatic Center for a coed swimming and diving meet against the RedHawks. The first event begins at 5 p.m. There is no admission charge.
Both Coach PETE LINDSAY's men's team (3-4 overall) and Coach DAVE JENNINGS' women's team (3-2) will both have difficult challenges against Coach Monty Hopkins improved Bearcats. Last year at UC (Jan. 14, 2011), Miami's men won by a score of 165-113 while the women's were victorious, 175.5-124.5.
During the holidays, Lindsay's team lost a meet at Wyoming, 149-90, on Dec. 31. Though the RedHawk men only were victorious in one of the individual events (freshman Joe Baumgartner from St. Louis, Mo. in the 100 freestyle), five young Miamians took runner-up finishes. Baumgartner took second in the 50 free, classmate Sam Crockett (Louisville, KY) was runner-up in the 200 breaststroke, sophomore Mike Cavanaugh (Bowling Green) touched second in the 200 butterfly, sophomore Sam Flessner (Springfield, IL) was runner-up in the 200 backstroke, and junior Alex Reinhardt (Littleton, CO) placed second in the 500 free. There was no diving competition.
Miami's women competed in a rare, outdoors, long-course meet at Boca Raton, Fla. against James Madison and Keene State. Bekka Westrick (Fairfield) streaked to victory in the 50 free with a time of 27.78 and was first in the (100 free 1:08.21). Other notable individual performances included two second-place efforts by senior CHELSEY BRUINGTON (Mission Viejo, CA) and junior STACIE CLAGG (Canton), and a runner-up finish by freshman KATIE BOOTSMA (Eden Prairie, MN). Bruington touched the wall in times of 1:02.52 in the 100 free and 2:13.70 in the 200 free. Clagg sparkled in the 100 breaststroke (1:18.94) and the 200 individual medley (2:32.36). Bootsma took second in the 100 backstroke (1:13.18). It was a non-scoring team meet.
