CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Running on just six days rest, the Miami University men's cross country team finished in sixth place Friday afternoon at the All-Ohio Championships, hosted by Cedarville University at King Cross Country Course. The RedHawks won the All-Ohio Championship title a year ago and had won each of their first three races this year, including the LSU Invitational last Saturday.
Junior Jarrod Eick (Hartville, Ohio) paced Miami for the third time this year, placing seventh in a season-best 8K time of 25:19.36, despite running on a muddy course in cold, rainy, windy conditions. Redshirt junior David Eichenberger (Plainfield, Ind.) was Miami's second scorer, finishing 26th in a season-best 25:51.07, while redshirt freshman Daniel Garleb (Pickerington, Ohio) was the third `Hawk to cross, taking 29th in 25:53.97, also a season best.
Making his season debut, redshirt junior Brett Wagner (Toledo, Ohio) was Miami's fourth scorer in 49th place in a personal-best 26:11.26. It was his first time finishing in Miami's scoring five in his career. Rounding out the scoring five for the RedHawks was redshirt sophomore Matt Marol (Evanston, Ill.), who placed 66th in 26:22.76 in his second race back from injury.
"Jarrod had a solid race coming off of LSU and Eichenberger was with him but at three miles he sort of fell apart along with the other guys," head coach Warren Mandrell said. "I'll take the fall for this though for putting them in the race on six days rest. On a positive note, Brett had a good race coming off of an injury and scored for the first time."
Cincinnati won the meet with 95 points, as Bearcats Eric Finan and Oliver Book were the top two finishers with Finan clocking a winning time of 24:44.49. Mid-American Conference foe Kent State was the runner-up with 109 points while fellow MAC rivals Akron and Ohio took third and fourth, respectively, with 140 and 158 points. Ashland finished just ahead of Miami with 173 points. In all, 45 teams competed, including nine Division I schools.
"Things didn't go well for the guys today. I probably shouldn't have put them in the meet just six days after LSU. They certainly had not recovered with that race being so tough and hot," Mandrell said. "But I wanted to support this meet because it's good for cross country."
Following the race, Marol was named Ohio Cross Country Freshman of the Year for 2010 (last season), after finishing 16th at last year's All-Ohio race, which was tops among then-freshmen. The honor is given a year later after the entire previous season has finished. Miami's coaching staff was also named 2010 Ohio Cross Country Coaching Staff of the Year.
Miami now has a week off before heading to the Penn State National Meet in University Park, Pa. on Friday, Oct. 14.
