Ohio Defeats Miami with Seventh Inning Rally

AKRON, Ohio - A three-run bottom of the seventh inning allowed Ohio to come from behind and defeat Miami, 5-4, Wednesday in the opening round of the MAC Softball Tournament. The RedHawks fall to 30-21 overall, while the Bobcats improve to 24-21.

Miami gets a second chance in the double elimination tournament Thursday when it faces Northern Illinois at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.The RedHawks will need to win the remainder of their games to stay alive in the tournament.

It started out well for the Red and White when they plated three runs in the top of the first inning. With one out, Kirstie Fehrenbach singled to left field. Meghan Mawn followed with a single through the left side to move Fehrenbach up to second. A single up the middle by Allie Larrabee brought Fehrenbach home and made it 1-0. Jordan McElroy singled down the left field line to load the bases with two out. Taylor Rice flew out to left field, but the leftfielder dropped the ball, allowing two more runs to score.

Ohio was able to get one run back in the bottom of the second off of Miami starter Jessica Simpson. It stayed that way until the top of the sixth when Jenna McGivney singled to right center to score McElroy. The Bobcats answered right back with a run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 4-2.

In the bottom of the seventh, the first two Ohio batters singled. The next hitter was hit by the pitch to load the bases with no one out. Simpson got Paige Kemezis to foul out for the first out of the inning, but Melissa Bonner hit a little flair shot just out of the reach of Mawn and into left field that brought home two runs. Emily Wethington came up next and her single up the middle brought home the run that gave Ohio the 5-4 victory.

Mawn finished the game 3-for-3. McElroy was 2-for-2 with one run scored, while Fehrenbach was 2-for-4 with one run scored. Simpson took the loss for Miami, giving up five runs on 11 hits while striking out eight.
