HELSINKI, Finland--After the first day of competition at the ISU World Championships, Miami University's synchronized skating team sits in ninth place among the 21-team field of the top synchronized skating teams in the world.
The RedHawks, one of two teams representing the United States at the event, posted a score of 56.64 for their short program, choreographed to "Bridge over Troubled Water." Miami notched a program component score of 28.21 and a technical element score of 28.43 and had a clean skate on the opening day of competition with no deductions.
Both Finnish teams lead the competition field with Team Finland 1 posting a score of 74.81 to sit atop the leader board. Team Finland 2 notched a score of 73.54, followed by Team USA 1 (the Haydenettes) with a score of 71.16, Team Canada 1 (70.77), Team Sweden 1 (68.14), Team Russia 1 (64.51) and Team Canada 2 (61.05).
The RedHawks trail Team Russia 2, who sits in eighth place, by a mere 0.39 margin.
Miami, competing as Team USA 2, holds a slight advantage over Team Sweden 2, who posted a score of 56.28 for its short program. Team Germany (53.42), Team Japan (48.72), Team Czech Republic (47.96), Team Italy (47.70), Team Switzerland (40.69), Team France (39.18), Team Austria (37.16), Team Australia (35.83), Team Croatia (31.27), Team Belgium (27.89) and Team Great Britain (16.06) round out the standings after Friday's competition, respectively.
This is the ninth World Championship appearance for Miami's senior synchronized skating program and the sixth in the last seven years. Miami is making a return to the World Championships after a one-year absence in 2009-10. Miami won silver at the World Championships in 2007, the best medal finish ever by any United States team at the event.
