Final Stats
OXFORD, Ohio - After two long rain delays and nearly seven hours of game time, the Miami RedHawks were able to pull off a 4-0 win over Kent State Saturday afternoon. Despite the wait, the rain never totally let up and the game was called in the top of the sixth inning. Miami improves to 23-18 overall and 6-7 in the Mid-American Conference. The Golden Flashes fall to 16-23 overall and 6-4 in the MAC.
Jessica Simpson earned another complete game shutout in the victory. It was her 12th shutout of the season, which sets a new single-season school record. It was also Simpson's 62nd career victory, putting her one short of Jackie Poggendorf's Miami career record of 63 victories. She allowed five hits and struck out four in 5.1 innings pitched.
The first two innings of the game were played at the original start time of 2 p.m. They were played very quickly, as the rains came in at 2:24 p.m. and force a delay of nearly 4 hours.
The game resumed at 7:17 p.m. in the top of the third inning. It remained scoreless until Miami broke through in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Kirstie Fehrenbach singled to the shortstop and advanced to second when she threw the ball away. Allie Larrabee moved her over to third on another infield single to the shortstop, while Meghan Mawn brought her home with a single to left field. Kathryn Russette was then able to reach on a fielding error by the shortstop, which allowed pinch-runner Brandi Hernandez to come home and make it 2-0.
The RedHawks tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth. Kristy Arbour led off the frame with a single up the middle. Daniela Torres reached on an error by the shortstop. Fehrenbach moved them both over with a sacrifice bunt, while Larrabee singled down the middle to bring in both runs.
In the top of the sixth, Kent State was able to get the first two runners on before Simpson forced the next hitter to groundout. The rains came again at 8:10 resulting in the tarp coming on the field. About 40 minutes later, the rain stopped and they pulled the tarp off, but as they began preparing the field for play again it started raining again and the umpires called the rest of the game.
Larrabee finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI. Mawn was 1-for-3 with one RBI. Fehrenbach was 1-for-2 with one run scored.
Miami will complete its series with Kent State at 1 p.m. tomorrow.
