YPSILANTI, Mich. - The RedHawk softball team completed a sweep of the two-game series against Eastern Michigan with a 5-3 victory on Sunday. Miami is now 19-17 overall and 4-6 in the Mid-American Conference. The Eagles fall to 21-11 overall and 7-5 in the MAC.
Junior pitcher Jessica Simpson was once again solid under cold and extremely windy conditions. Facing a steady wind of nearly 30 mph, along with gusts of 45 mph, she held EMU to three runs (two earned) on six hits. She struck out five to earn her 17th victory of the season and 60th of her career. She is now only three away from tying Jackie Poggendorf for the all-time lead at Miami.
Just like Saturday, the RedHawks broke the game open with a big second inning. With one out, Kayla Ledbetter drew a walk. Kathryn Russette moved her over to second with a single to left center. Kristy Arbour got Miami on the board with a single down the left field line that scored Ledbetter. A double by Daniela Torres brought home Russette and resulted in a pitching change. After recording an out, a wild pitch scored Arbour. On the same play the catcher threw the ball away and allowed Torres to score and make it 4-0.
After a solo home run by EMU in the bottom of the third made it 4-1, the RedHawks completed their scoring with a run in the top of the fourth. Russette led off the frame with an infield single. Arbour moved her over a base with a sacrifice bunt. Torres then brought her home with a single up the middle. The Eagles would make it 5-3 off a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth, but would be unable to get any closer.
Torres finished the day 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. Russette was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Miami returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Butler for a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.
