18 RedHawk Swimmers Win Academic All-MAC Honors

CLEVELAND - The Mid-American Conference announced its 2010-11 Women's Swimming and Diving Academic All-MAC team Tuesday (April 12), as voted on by faculty athletic representatives at MAC institutions, and Miami University had a league-high 18 selections, including seven first-team honorees.

The women's Academic All-MAC squad included eight student-athletes who earned First Team All-MAC honors during the 2011 MAC Women's Swimming and Diving Championships as well as another three who were on the Second Team. MAC Swimmer of the Year Kelsey Vehr (Cincinnati, 3.24, Art) of Miami won titles in the 400 IM and the 100 and 200 Breaststroke while Ohio's Rachel Heim set new MAC records in the 100 and 200 Butterfly. Other MAC Champions to be named to the Academic All-MAC team include Carly Harter of Toledo (200 IM), Leah Thornton (Helena, AL, 3.89 GPA, Zoology) of Miami (100 Backstroke) and Claire Leichty of Toledo (1650 Freestyle).

Besides Vehr and Thornton, other first-team selections from Miami include Megan Brunn (Mansfield, 3.69 GPA, Marketing), Miranda Kaltenborn (Memphis, TN, 3.57 GPA, Psychology), Kelsey Mallon (Wheaton, IL, 3.80 GPA, Speech Pathology and Audiology), Lisa Werwinski (Canton, 3.98 GPA, Mathematics and Statistics) and Bekka Westrick (Fairfield, 3.20 Exercise Science).

Chosen as honorable mention picks were seven other RedHawk swimmers, including Katie Arlinghaus (Oxford, 3.68 GPA, Latin American Studies and Business), Ellen Barhorst (West Chester, 3.88 GPA, Middle Childhood Education), Margaret Eppright (Shaker Heights, 3.25 GPA, Early Childhood Education), Mandi Grandjean (Canton, 3.80 GPA, Political Science and Pre-Journalism), Jessica Hesse (Bedminster, NJ, 3.44 GPA, Exercise Science), Maddie Kete (Bay Village, 3.73 GPA, Accountancy), Laura Krueger (Cincinnati, 3.77 GPA, Biochemistry), Maegan O'Connor (Fishers, IN, 3.29 GPA, Exercise Science), Nicole Roddenbery (Peachtree, GA, 3.34 GPA, Interdisciplinary Business Management), Molly Tyler (Birmingham, MI, 3.23 GPA, Early Childhood Education) and Jenny Warmolts (Upper Arlington, 3.84 GPA, Environmental Science and Political Science).

The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50% of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
