Final Stats
OXFORD, Ohio - A solo home run in the top of the fifth proved to be the difference as Ball State took a pitcher's duel from Miami, 1-0, on Sunday. The RedHawks fall to 16-15 overall and 2-4 in the Mid-American Conference. The Cardinals improve to 24-14 overall and 5-1 in the MAC.
Jessica Simpson was in control most of the day against Ball State as she kept them off the board for the first four innings. Amanda Montalto led off the top of the fifth inning with a solo home run that just cleared the center field fence. Simpson would shake that run off and hold the Cardinals scoreless the rest of the way. She finished with a tough luck loss, giving up only that one earned run on eight hits. She struck out seven and now has 179 on the season.
Miami's best opportunity to score came in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one out, Meghan Mawn hit an infield single to the shortstop. Daniela Torres followed with a single through the left side to move Mawn to second. After a strikeout, Allie Larrabee singled to left field to load the bases with two outs. Jenna McGivney was up next, but Ball State starter Audra Sanders induced her into a groundout to shortstop that McGivney was just a step away from beating out.
Mawn was the RedHawks' best hitter on the day, finishing 2-for-3.
Miami will look to get back on the winning track when it travels to Wright State Wednesday for a 5 p.m. non-conference game.
