Box Score

DeKALB, Ill. -- Northern Illinois plated its only two runs with two outs in the fourth inning, while Jeremy Gonzales held Miami to only three hits in a 2-0 victory over the RedHawks Sunday afternoon. NIU won the final two games of the series after Miami had won the opener.

Gonzales (4-4) held a perfect game into the sixth inning, retiring 17 straight before Jon Edgington singled to center. The righty got the next four outs before Adam Weisenburger led off the eighth with a double down the left field line. But Kevin Bower flied out to center before strikeouts by Brad Gschwind and Ryan Kaup to end the threat.

Nate Bowles, who delivered a pinch-hit single with two outs in the ninth, was the only other RedHawk to reach base against Gonzales.

Miami starter Brooks Fiala (2-4) nearly matched the effort on the mound, allowing just six hits over 7.1 innings pitched. He struck out five, while not issuing any walks.

The Huskies (13-16, 6-3) grounded into two routine outs to start the fourth, but a single and double put them up 1-0. The next batter hit a roller to third that got through Gschwind -- it was ruled a hit -- to make the score 2-0.

Miami (16-16, 5-4) returns to action Tuesday at the annual Joe Nuxhall Classic, held this year at the Marge Schott Stadium at the University of Cincinnati. The RedHawks open with Wright State at 3 p.m., then face either the host Bearcats or Xavier on Wednesday.
