Beres Sweeps MAC Diving Honors

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Miami junior JIM BERES took first place in three-meter diving competition Saturday (Mar. 5) at the Mid-American Conference Championships and, in the process, was named MAC Diver of the Year for a second consecutive season.
As a team, Miami placed fourth with 485 points, trailing champion Buffalo (763.5), runner-up Eastern Michigan (685) and third-place Southern Illinois. Missouri State (432) finished fifth, Ball State (239) placed sixth, and Evansville (126) wound up in seventh place.
Beres accumulated 399.35 points in winning the three-meter event, just a single point more than EMU's Jeff Craig. Miami teammates Chris Hoppler finished third with 346.30 points while MICHAEL GRAINGER placed fifth with 317.95 points.
The trio's coach, KR LI, was named MAC Diving Coach of the Year for the third consecutive year. EMU's Jacob Hanson was named MAC Swimmer of the Year, while MAC Coach of the Year honors went to Buffalo's Andy Bashor.
The 1650 freestyle saw RedHawk swimmers Brendan Melling, Sean Minderlein and Alex Reinhardt place fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.
In the 200 backstroke event, Miami's TOMMY JANSZEN placed 12th and Ian Joyce finished 15th.
The 100 freestyle saw Mark Healey finish seventh in the finals with a time of 45.44, while Chris Gunnels placed 13th.
Miami's Jason Hass took fifth in the 200 butterfly in a time of 1:49.66 and Mike Cavanaugh finished 16th.
In the final event, Miami's 400 freestyle relay quartet of Healey, Hass, Anderson Whipp and Dan Nemeth place fourth.
Beres, Melling and Alex Reinhardt, the 500 freestyle champ, were named first-team All-MAC selections. Hass was chosen as a second teamer.
