RedHawks Finish Buzz Classic with Win Over UConn

KENNESAW, Ga. - Having had an unexpected day off and a venue change due to the rain, Miami concluded play the Buzz Classic with a split on Sunday. The RedHawks fell to Georgia State, 7-3, in the opener, before defeating Connecticut, 3-2, in the nightcap. Both games were played on the campus of Kennesaw State University. Miami is now 8-6 on the season.

In the second game against UConn, the RedHawks gave up a run in the bottom of the first inning before evening the score in the top of the fourth. With two outs, Kayla Ledbetter singled up the middle. Taylor Rice followed with a single of her own to move Ledbetter to second. An Allie Larrabee walk moved her to third, and when Kristy Arbour was hit by a pitch, Ledbetter scored.

The RedHawks took the lead with two runs in the top of the fifth. Jessica Simpson led off the frame with a walk. Kirstie Fehrenbach's grounder to the shortstop was thrown away, which allowed pinch-runner Daniela Torres to come around to score and Fehrenbach to reach third base. Two batters later, Ledbetter hit an infield single to second base that brought Fehrenbach home.

Simpson would allow the Huskies another run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 3-2, but she got two strikeouts and a groundout in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win. She gave up two earned runs and four hits in seven innings pitched, while striking out 11.

Ledbetter finished the day 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored. Rice was 2-for-4.

Georgia State was able to get five runs in the first two innings off of starter Katie Osburn. Simpson came in relief, but the Panthers were able to score two more off of her in the top of the fourth.

Miami scored two of its runs in the bottom of the second. With Arbour on first base and one out, back-to-back singles by Jordan McElroy and Larrabee loaded the bases. Meghan Mawn brought the first run home with a single to centerfield. Ledbetter made it 5-2 with a walk that forced home Larrabee.

Trailing 7-2, the RedHawks brought home their final run in the bottom of the fourth. With the bases loaded, a Mawn groundout would score Fehrenbach.

Miami managed 10 hits against Georgia State Sunday, but stranded nine base runners. Mawn finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI. Larrabee was 3-for-3 with one run scored. Ledbetter had three walks on the day and now has a team leading 15 for the season.
