LAKELAND, Fla. -- Sophomore right-hander Mac Thoreson held Mount St. Mary's to four hits over eight innings, but three late runs cost Miami in a 3-2 10-inning loss to the Mountaineers Saturday evening. The deciding run scored with two outs on an errant throw by Adam Weisenburger.
Thoreson struck out five, while walking just one but earned no decision for the second time in three starts. Bryce Redeker went 2-for-4 as part of Miami's seven-hit attack.
The RedHawks (3-4) went up 1-0 in third on an RBI by Ryan Brenner. Ryan Kaup reached on an infield single to shortstop, then two outs later stole second. Brenner singled to right to bring home Kaup.
In the sixth, the RedHawks added a run in one of the strangest fashions ever. Jon Edgington singled to left with one out, then stole second. After a strike out, Weisenburger hit a high pop straight up on the infield. Mountaineer third baseman Zach Helman had a beat on the out, but stumbled over the mound and the ball fell safely in, bouncing between first and second. Weisenburger hustled the entire play, and when he rounded second, saw third uncovered, winning a footrace to earn the RBI triple.
Miami stranded a key run at third in the eighth after Ryan Curl led off the inning with a triple, but was caught stealing at home for the final out.
Mount St. Mary's (1-1) rallied for two runs in the ninth to force extra innings. Andrew Caron led off with a double just inside the right field line, ending the day for Thoreson. Miami closer Sam Dawes came in and induced a groundout before allowing an RBI single. Mark Quaranta then doubled into the gap in right center, but the RedHawks gained an out when pinch runner Jay Knight, missed second base. But Sam Nott followed with a double off the glove of Redeker in left field, tying the score at 2-2.
In the 10th, Brandon Scott induced a leadoff walk from reliever Brooks Fiala. Matt Rosinski came on for the next batter and got two outs, first on a sacrifice, then on a strikeout. But his first pitch to Kyle Kane was in the dirt, and Weisenburger's throw to third sailed was wide and went into left field. Fiala took the loss to fall to 0-1.
Miami gets a chance at redemption right away, returning to the field at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning for a doubleheader against Lehigh.
