Junior Team in Sixth after Short Program

ONTARIO, Calif.--After the first day of the U.S. National Championships, Miami University's junior synchronized skating team sits in sixth place among the 11-team field.
The RedHawks, skating to "Heartbreaker" and "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" by Pat Benetar, had a clean skate with no deductions. Miami earned a 49.45 for its short program with a total element score of 24.72 and a program component score of 24.73.
Skyliners lead the junior field entering Friday's free skate with a score of 63.37 and are closely followed by Team Braemar with a score of 62.75. The Lexettes and Chicago Jazz follow with scores of 57.21 and 53.11, respectively. Miami trails fifth-place Evolution, who posted a score of 51.45, by two points. The RedHawks lead the Team Image (44.64) by nearly five points and Synchronettes, who posted a score of 42.26, by more than seven points.
Team Excell (42.18), Hockettes (38.79) and Synchro St. Louis Diamond Edges (31.23) round out the junior field.
Miami returns to the ice on Friday when the junior team completes its stint at the U.S. National Championships with its free skate event and the senior team begins its competition with the short program.
